Very little to report tonight - basically went to drill the fire tube and other holes and couldn't find my new cone drill ! I ordered it ages ago and KNEW where it was - only it wasn't Tore the shed apart, looking in all the likely (and unlikely) places - I only saw it about three weeks ago. Ended up adding a new shelf to get some of the stuff off of my bench so not a totally wasted day. I have spotted all the holes in the tube plate with a 1/16 drill, but to finish the job I first of all need my memory to work, or just use straight drills.

Ha! I own loads of end mills and slot drills but only one of the ball nosed variety. Needed it for a job last week, turned the place upside down as it wasn't where I knew it was. Bought a new one in the end. So far it remains in hiding. When you find your cone drill let me know where it was and I'll look in a similar place! ;D

Pete
Cone drills are frustration. Not because they don't work, they do but because the ones available here have metric steps. You guessed it, copper pipe comes in barstardised metric dimensions. I purchase an imperail stepped drill everytime I am in the USA. Can't find any of them! I think the sep refers to their walking ability.
I made my self a drill for opening out 12mm holes to 12.7mm (1/2 "). Very clever, uses silver steel, turned to size and milled a cutting edge then hardened. Great if my mill would turn left hand instead of right, I got the flute the wrong way round.
Good Luck! Ian

Ian, it was my cone drill bit I lost - I have my step drills! (although I have to agree about the metric).
Rex, is that 'when' or 'if' ;D

Nothing much to report this week - we had a crazy public run day today - 9 or 10 parties and people queing for rides and others queing to enter the grounds. 6 Locos running flat out! (we would struggle to run more than another 2 I think). Next weekend my wife and I are Rogaining so there will be little or no work then either Oh I still havn't found my cone drill, must be with the lost socks!

Well unfortunately nothing to add this weekend either - Saturday we had no power due to work on the powerlines in the area and Sunday was spent catching up from Saturday Next weekend is the Club public run day and the weekend after that AMRA (I think) so I think it's going to be quite for a while.

Managed a couple of evening sessions last week - much to my detriment! I should have learnt by now that the more I rush things the more I stuff them up Totally misdrilled the backhead and the rear firebox plate. I drilled the firebox for the blowdown bush - why? and offset the firehole on the backhead. I have now made new formers pobably as I should have done from the start, with pilot holes, from 3mm steel and will need to make new flanged plates - such is life. Attachments:

S##t happens Pete. We have all done it, my favourite is attempting something when I am tired and not really enthusiastic, recipe for mistakes. Cheers, Arch

That's really a pain Pete but we've all been in the same boat. You'll get there believe me, I have a bin full of discarded parts I've botched.

Thanks gents - I know the brown stuff happens, I've also got a box full of 'nearly there' bits, probably almost a whole extra Northumbrian but I did say it was a warts and all build thread - so it was just (another) warty bit.

Bugger....
You need to use this as a reason to negotiate more workshop time. If you are away too long you loose the touch. You need to keep your skill levels up by regular sessions.
It works for me, if I'm away to long I now get asked why I'm not out there.

Nice reasoning Pete. It's precisly because I have been missing out on 'workshop' time that I made those mistakes. I know that I only have myself setting the timing but just wanted some forward movement ... and instead got reverse Having said which won't be doing much this week. I currently pick up my daughter after Uni 4 nights a week, as I am the nearest when at work, but it still adds at least an hour onto my trip home, by which time I just want tea and to vegetate.

Uploaded with ImageShack.usWell I have got the Backhead and Rear firebox plates corrected now. Another frustrating weekend with more work on the powerlines so no power at home for most of today, wish they would hurry up and finish, supposedly we have another day of no power on Wednesday, but I'll be at work for most of that one
