sevicing gauges

Hi all
I've recently got hold of a second hand set of telescope gauges, before I start using them I would like to sevice them (and my s/h DTI for that matter). what I need to know is what sort of cleaning and lubrication should I be using?

Any cleaning solvent and light oil will be fine. The important thing with telescope gauges is that they must be free to expand and the ends are nice and shiny or smooth .
