Advice for my first project, please. The exhaust pipe on the Stuart S50 should be 3/16 diameter. The cylinder should be tapped 1/4 inch for the union. On my engine this is 5/32 inch. My initial thoughts are that the cylinder needs to be corrected to 1/4 inch as per drawing. Before I go down that road, could a very short piece of 5/32 pipe be threaded and screwed into the cylinder. This could then have a 5/32 to 3/16 union attached about half an inch from the cylinder, or would this restriction adversely affect the performance. Thanks.

Yes, and no. Yes to screw the pipe in, and no, it wont affect performance.
An S50 is hardly likely to be run flat out for long periods, driving something, it is more usually used as a demonstration engine. In such cases, pipe size wont make any significant difference.

Hello Alan.
Thank you for the reply and most helpful comments.
The intention is for the exhaust to exit into a steam/oil seperator, about two inches away from the engine and then on to the 500 boiler chimney bush.
I had been hoping to run a Stuart Dynamo from the S50 to power a couple of street light fittings. Since reading your reply, I am just wondering if the S50 is man enough?

It should run the Stuart dynamo, the two were often paired together. It is still a light load. (An unintentional pun. Sorry!)

Thank you Alan.
Your advice is much appreciated.
Ref the LIGHT load - still chuckling,
Nice that you have a sense of humour

If any thing, I would have thought that a small increase in the input pressure would balance this out.

Hi All if there is room you could mill a pad on the cylinder casting and use a pipe soldered to a flange to connect the exhaust. Regards Paul
