Hi Everyone, I am not sure if this is allowed but I am sure someone will tells me if it is not. I have the opportunity to purchase a part built Simplex from a deceased estate as shown in the attachment and there are 2 problems. 1. The only info that I have on what is being sold is in the photo plus a full set of drawings. I can see cylinder assemblies, a rolling frame with coupled wheels, plate work but no boiler and not much else. 2. The sale is a tendering process hence my question. Can anyone give me a rough, and I do mean rough, idea of what a Simplex in this stage of construction might be worth?? Obviously ball park or ROM costs are all the is possible and, at the end, I will have to figure out how much I am prepared to pay but I would like some sort of starting point. I have other photos but would need to either attach them to another thread of send them by personnel Email but they do not add any great detail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Arch PS I started this thread in General Chat and then realised that it was more appropriate here. Attachments:

Arch, When trying to value something like that, I get the catalogue out and add up the cost of all the castings and other materials I can see, including the plans if they are included. The greatest part of the labour can usually be discounted for anything that is in an early stage of construction and a bit more value added for more advanced projects. You must also be prepared to find out that it was not built by one of the hundreds of toolmakers working night shift at Rolls Royce (if you believe all the ads you see), and have to consign some of it to the scrap bin. At the end of the day, you have almost answered your own question, it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay.

To get an idea of what a part build engine is worth , I advice you to go to smex.net.au and have a look at some prices and make your own estimate .

I agree with what's already been said. To help a little I paid £2500 for a running example with boiler certificate needing some tlc. A boiler could easily set you back £1500. If it was in the UK I don't think I would pay more than £500 for what I can see.
