Cracking looking loco. It looks to me like the vertical cylinder midway between the wheels could be how it's activated. A piston lifted in that cylinder could apply the brakes to both wheels. Just guessing from what I can see, so could be way off the mark.

jgb, thats what it looks like to me too.
The rods going out to the brake blocks look like they are threaded on the inner end for equalisation.
I do have a thing for shunters....
James.

Thanks for the replies, do you think the central piston is vacuum operated? there are cranked levers on both sides of the engine, you can see the left side one in the photo, the other side is the same, and similar to a reversing rod, but seems to terminate just in front of the brake piston. Would the NRM hold any plans of the general arrangement and any details of the back-head fittings, as the 1/6th scale part built model I bought is without any plans, so I will be working from a few photo's that survive regards Jeff

If you can get hold of a copy of Locomotives Illustrated no.122 - 'The main line pugs', there are four pages of photos of these intriguing engines. They were clearly right-hand drive, as was standard on the Midland Railway, and so the lever on the right hand side was the reversing lever.
What the lever on the left hand side was, is anyone's guess, but it sems to be connected to the brake cylinder in some way. It might have been arranged so that when the handbrake was applied, the piston was lifted and the brake applied. The brake cylinder has a stuffing box gland at the bottom and was almost certainly steam operated, as these engines would not have carried a vacuum ejector.
There was an excellent 7.1/4" gauge model of one of these engines in the Midlands exhibition at Donnington a few years back - maybe someone has some photos of it?
