Just had to share a eureka moment - at LONG last my Simplex has come to life and it now runs on air ;D Here's a link to a video I took last week - it's 20 MB so may take a while to download:- www.nigelheasman.com/Simplex/VIDEO0019.3gp It took me a couple of days to find out why the left hand side piston wouldn't go fwds - I'd forgotten to relieve the front cylinder cover where the port enters the cylinder, effectively blocking the exhaust/inlet passage - dooooh ! Anyway, it now works well and I must say this stage is a big encouragement after many hours making up the valve linkage bits. Who knows, I may get it finished by this time next year!!!

Congratulations on achieving a major mile stone. It really is a great feeling to see all that work and effort rewarded as your loco comes to life for the first time. On the quiet don't feel too bad about the cylinder cover I forgot to put a hole in a gasket which effectively cut off the blower. Took me ages and a lot of rude words before the penny dropped. Jim.

Congratulations! It's a major milestone.
What is a .3gp file? I can't play it on my Linux box.
Russell.

Video format popular on mobile phones apparently, vlc media player handled it under windoze.
Congratulations Nigel, I can still remember the joy, and surprise, when Rob Roy ran on air.

. On the quiet don't feel too bad about the cylinder cover I forgot to put a hole in a gasket which effectively cut off the blower. Took me ages and a lot of rude words before the penny dropped. Jim. Years ago a friend picked up a mower from the local dump. The guy there said he could have it as it was knackered. Turned out that someone had made a new carb gasket and hadn't punched the hole through it! ;D Ran first pull and he used it for years! You aren't the first and you won't be the last!

Thanks guys - sorry for late response! I still run it nearly every day just for the thrill of seeing it "work" ! Yes, Russell, the .3gp format had me puzzled as well but that's how it came off my htc phone but it ran ok on my linux machine, using smplayer, so I thought no more about it. Glad you found a solution.
Now getting on with the buffers and with thanks to Baggo and DrJohn, using Baggo's method of a rod trapped between the headstock and cross slide, below the lathe centre line, winding the cross slide in and out is producing a lovely smooth curve on the buffer face. A magic solution to a problem that had me puzzled for a few days. What a great hobby this is. Cheers
