As I get older... I get less patient. Yes, thats the opposite to the accepted wisdom..but its true.
So I quite fancy starting a David Malcolm "Scamp" 0-4-0 loco, as in early EIM's, as a parallel to some other locos..a quick and easy if you like, that I can do as other things are cooling, drying, waiting for materials, talking to the missis about the latest bargains in Top Shop or Tesco, or all the other irritations that get in the way of getting on with it.
Has anybody done one?, is it worth it?, as it looks like it could'nt pull the skin off a rice pudding (in 5" guage terms.. the boiler and cylinders are smaller than a 3/1/2 Maisie, but it certainly looks like a nice design.

Hi John,
one of the members in my club has one and it will pull the driver plus 2 to 3 adults. Plus you can just stick in your boot with no hassle. Useful when the weather turns for the worst just as you've got steam up, as what usually happens in the UK!!

Yes I've got a big loco, but all the heaving, winching etc does wear a bit thin. How I long for a garden big enough to put down my own track; but then I'd be doing gardening instead I suppose Dug out the EIM issues and started this evening.. thanks, It's a freelance sort of thing so I can always add the little steam water pump I would like on the running board John

I haven't built one of these, but I plan to help my son to build one once he is old enough to make a start. I thimk it is a far more sensible first loco than a "Tich" for a beginner as it can pull a decent load once finished

With regards to the last remark I am attempting a "Tich" but this "Scamp" sounds interesting is there any where I could get plans and a book?

There never was a book, but there was aseries of articles in Engineering in Miniature ca. 1982-4. I can probably access and photocopy some of these. Drawings and castings are still listed by Reeves.

With regards to the last remark I am attempting a "Tich" but this "Scamp" sounds interesting is there any where I could get plans and a book? Plans from Reeves, pretty incomplete for a beginner I see....no book but was a Series in EIM. Vastly more powerful than a Tich, if well built there is no comparison. Its a sort of 3 1/2 inch gauge in 5" legs. Mine (now) will haul six adults in roller bogies so I am told...hmmm a steam pump for water on the right for more interest? Cheated..I said I was less patient as I got older...I bought the one advertised www.stationroadsteam.co.uk/stock%20pages/2566/index.htm ...very neat engineering.. in and out of my boot without a strained back...ideal. I really don't know why people want to scale up and up...the monsters in 7 1/4 I have had for a short time. When it started to involve a van and and hydraulic lifters, I nearly needed a fork lift, its just too much effort for a quick run with friends, which is where the fun is. Each to their own I suppose. Having said that I still have a 7 1/4 Black 5 in the works (well read my shed ;D) I have no idea when I will finish that. Ohh..when this hobby was more simple... John

Ohhh can you photocopy these?? The one I have got is very neat. But the drawings from Reeves are rather bad and i want to add the brakes. Did you mean photocopy or scan?

I'll see if I can find them, but as I explained to someone else in a PM most of my magazines are currently in store. Might have the brakes drawings to hand as I made the parts for fitting to another loco. Give me a few days and I'll see what I can do.

Dear John, The Scamp looks like an easier to build Gemma with fewer castings, And yes you can just lift them up and hide from the rain when it comes, or build a short tunnel on the small garden railway. I grew a tunnel in my mums garden years ago and spent all day and most of the night with Gemma. A grown up 3 1/2" engine, far better than a titch, forgiving in tolerances. David Scott.
