Gentlemen she runs!! On air at least. She sounds pretty tight in spots yet but she runs. Yahoo!!! ;D ;D ;D Still along way to go before it is finalized but at least I know she runs. Click on pic for video. I started this about 3 years ago. (For back ground see here www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8358.0 Ron

It IS likely to have tight spots when run with the wheels suspended. The motion gear is designed to work properly when the springs are compressed to about mid travel. If you haven't built a rolling road you can fit wedges to raise the axles.

Hi Russel, I should have mentioned I have 1/8 packing installed to raise the axles up to supposed running height as suggested by Martin Evans in the build instructions. Is 1/8 th enough or should I have more. It seems to be about right but I don't know.

That should be O.K. my simplex chassis runs fine with that spacing. Locomotives do need a fair bit of slack in the motion. I can remember seeing steam locomotives come to a stop at the platform and hearing a clatter as the coupling rods dropped.

Thanks Shawki. My old camera will only do black and white vids.
As far as on steam it will be quite a while I'm afraid. Still have to get confident with silver soldering/brazing. Plus all the other things that need to be made yet.
Still trying to figure out what to do with my copper tube for the boiler. It is 4 in dia. and plans call for 4 3/4 in. I have been thinking about slitting it and riveting and silver soldering/brazing in a piece to bring it to 4 3/4 or 5 in.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron , just a suggestion , why not roll one from a sheet and use butt strap and rivet and silver solder , obtaining an Australian boiler code will give you all details of how to . I would keep the 4" tube for future use .

Shawki, The price of a sheet of copper for this is astronomical here. I have the tube and another that I can get donor material for the strap. Otherwise I may have to look into a steel boiler. It all boils down to $$$$$$ you know. Ron
