I keep on being asked what I want for Christmas. Since no one is going to get me the Tom Senior mill I so richly deserve, I suspect it's back to a book list :-( Anyone caught sight of this book yet: www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/0955335906/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/026-4741909-2926067Any good? Presumably the same Bongo/Chris referred to in the ‘Bongo’ thread in Images.

I treated myself to a copy for my birthday ;D It's a very thorough book and goes into every little detail. It's by far the best book on the subject that I've seen and worth every penny.

Hi all,
I'll just show my ignorance....I didn't realise until I saw this thread that the Chris Vine on this forum built the B1 'Bongo'. It caused me great distress when I saw his loco at last year's Harrogate show....how could I ever hope to build anything which came close to the superb quality of that engine? On the other hand, it was a great inspiration! I have great respect for Chris and all you other gifted engineers who can produce such masterpieces. If his book helps you get anywhere near the quality of finish shown on 'Bongo' then it's a must buy. It's going on my list. Now I'm off to 'Exalt' Chris!

Very much agree. I have it - not for my birthday but it is really good. I have learned a great deal already and would be surprised if even the most expert on this site could not learn something. Very practical. Recommended for Christmas, then you can read it on Christmas Day after the Queen, whilst wearing your new socks, gloves, tie and jumper - whilst dippping into your selection box! ;D Regards, Tony

I remember seeing Chris Vine's loco 'Bongo' at the Bristol SMEE show at Thornbury last year. The paint finish, indeed, the whole loco, was truly superb.Think I'll get a copy of the book too!

I also bought this book recently (direct from Chris) and it's very good, with lots of excellent colour photos. It describes the use of a spray gun rather than an airbrush, since Bongo is 7 1/4", but I've already picked up a lot of tips that seem equally applicable to an airbrush. It's also very good on lining and transfers. John www.britanniabuilder.co.uk

Hi All
Just to confirm, yes the book is written by 'our own' Chris Vine and indeed the loco featured is Bongo, magnificent!
Have a look at Images Bongo on here to see an action shot of my huge bulk being whisked along by Bongo in Chris's garden along with cries of encouragement as he took the photo! ;D
I bought a copy of the book from him whilst in Scotland. Loads of good tips and written in an amusing style.
Cheers
Brian

Hi All,
could I please add that if you don't want to pay by cheque, the book is available on Ebay (for a pound more I am afraid as they are expensive to sell by. In fact the 2.45 doesn't even cover the costs of p and p let alone ebay.....
Cheers Chris.

Ohh I dunno Chris, by the time you pay the post office for a stamp these days and your shoe leather walking to the post box, your pound more does'nt seem too bad!! I also saw your loco at the exhibition, you deserve to be proud of it, absolutely superb, congratulations. Regards, John

Got your book today, thanks Chris. Bye the way, polite as it is, no need to address me as Mr Lee.
My first comment, its a bit expensive, but small print runs are.
This may become the reference for it's very specialised genre. It is very complete, a good read, and certainly has taught me a few things even after 35 years doing this.
If you want to paint your loco or indeed any other model engineering project, buy this.
How is that for a review? I don't personally know Chris
Regards
John

Dear Chris, Now the site has a colour photo of the engine I am drawing, building and eventually painting, Your book sounds just perfect. Loved seeing your engine at Bristol this year. With a birthday comming in April hints will have to be dropped. After reading all the reviews above, you could easily save at least £ 100 on paint mistakes on even a small model. Thanks for a much needed book. David.

Hi Jim,
Amazon are a bit peculiar. They offer the book and don't seem to order it from me. (A friend ordered one from them weeks ago and nothing ever happens). Perhaps they are getting it from another stockist but it seems a bit unlikely. You could cancel the order and get it straight from me, I should be able to get it to you by Christmas if you want.
Chris.

Good God Chris, if that's what you go through 'just to paint a loco', what on earth are you like when it comes to making one! :-)))
This is a seriously impressive book, you really have set the bar higher and been generous enough to share the fruits of your research with the rest of us.
Many thanks
Matt
