I'm just starting to think about painting my 'Enterprise' and having recently bought a litre of long life etch primer and the activator to go with it (total cost just over £25), I am now looking for the thinner to go with it. I'm quite used to having to buy 5 litres of stuff when I go to commercial auto paint places, but the price tag on 5 litres of the designated thinner fair took my breath away - they wanted £46 +VAT! Can anyone tell me what is so special about 'NEXA Autocolor P850-1692 2K Low VOC fast thinner' that makes it so expensive. Would I be able to use something cheaper, and if so what, or alternatively where can I buy it by the litre or half litre? What does the 2k designation mean? Questions, questions!

Hi Ian,
I would try the firm of Trimite. They have trade counters around the country. Their two pack etch primers take some beating and they sell the paint and hardener (you won't need thinner) by the litre. 2k usually means two pack.
Cheers Chris

Hi Ian I've sprayed a fair bit of 2 pack etch over the years and I've never needed to thin it just mixed the primer and activator and away it goes, try a wee experiment with anti bloom cellulose thinners mixed in and see what happens. I take it you're using pretty good PPE if you're spraying 2 pack? not nice stuff Ron

Thanks for the replies. Good to know that I probably won't need thinners, I was just a bit worried as I have been told that the coating should only be a few microns thick so as to avoid masking the detail. As for PPE, I have downloaded the safety data sheet for the product and it only specifies reasonable extraction facilities, so I'm reasonably hopeful that it won't do me any great damage, but thanks for your concern. Now to get 20 years worth of oil off it. (That's how long its taken me up to now!) Any suggestions as to how to do this will be very welcome.

If you go to Page 6 of the subjects under the main General Chat there is a thread called Topic: "de greasing before painting," started by alan66. This discusses de-greasing at some length by the combined brains. Enjoy! Regards, Tony
