Hello all
I recall a recent discussion about flange sealing and one contributer in particular who swears by 542 thread seal and 574 flange sealant. - You know who you are !
I have been using the thread seal and agree it is excelent.
I have now had to remove the valve chest (which has no gasket) from my traction engine twice now, and been faced with one hell of a mess from the STAG B steam jointing compound that i have used until now. I have experimented with the loctite flange sealant on pieces of scrap metal and found it is very easy to use, non messy and a reliable seal BUT it sticks quite well. That is my only worry - what if i cannot remove my valve chest again in the future. I am also concerned that once it works its way in to the fixing stud holes as well, it will be impossible to get the assembly apart.
I would be interested to hear what the before mentioned contributer thinks on this score (sorry i cant remember your name)
I cant use a gasket in this instance as there is no room - although i think i recall Tel saying once that brown paper envelopes work ok. That would be the least messy of all.
Sorry to back track. I cant seem to find the original thread.
Best wishes Jim

Sorry in not getting back earlier but must have missed this when the old PC died before Christmas.
Loctite Flange Sealant, tis possibly me that was going on about it as I use it all the time for all sorts of things. Brilliant stuff, never had a problem with it.
Hope that helps.

Try Blue HYLOMAR from your local car spares shop. Rolls Royce developed it for use on Aero Engines so I'm told
