hi mike, a friend of mine who makes lots of 5"g wagons machines them out of steel bar then presses in oilite bushes. when i made the axleboxes for my 5"g LBSCR 10 ton wagon i machined them out of 1.5" brass bar which i had plenty of, as there was quite a lot of detail to be incorporated in the axleboxes. the bar was milled 'square' with rounded edges, then the sides reduced in the mill each side for the webs that go either side of the 'W' irons and for the webs for the covers to be attached, then milled the tops to produce the raised bit where the spring buckle rests. the front faces were then milled at an angle as per the fullsize boxes i was copying. each box was then chucked in the 4-jaw in the lathe for boring out for axle material. finally i made the covers which i etched using ferric chloride solution to produce the raised lettering. these are then bolted onto the fronts of the boxes. if you can obtain old copies of EIM doug hewson has described his own methods of making axleboxes many times. if your pocket is deep enough whitemetal lost wax castings are available for all the standard boxes which saves all the above work... but i found it quite enjoyable and didnt take too long once i'd worked out all the machining coordinated on the mill for the first box. cheers, julian
