Has anyone any experience on using Hylomar Universal Blue jointing for sealing threads and flanged joints on their Simplex (or other) loco boilers / cylinders ?? If it's no good, any recommendations for a good product ??
Thanks Nigel

I think it's excellent stuff. Much nicer than the red goo. As used by Isle of Wight ME members at The Pump House.

I use Foliac graphite compound but that would be a bit heavy for 1" scale.

Hello Chaps--------- try this >>>>>>>>>>>> Loctite® 5770 High Temperature Thread Sealant is formulated to seal threaded pipe fittings through continuous exposure to heat of up to 280C, it particularly suitable for pressurized steam lines and boiler rooms. <<<<<<<<<<<<< It's in the form of a liquid PTFE... Graphited gaskets are normally specified for steam and high temp applications. Have a look at this }------- www.sealrite.co.uk/gasket_sheet.htm --------------------

Hi "4930hagley", any idea where, in UK, one can buy Loctite 5770 ? Lots of Googling hasn't thrown up any UK suppliers !!

Haven't used Hylomar on my Simplex but have used it in the past on vintage car engines - excellent stuff!
Russell.

Hello chaps----- yes RUSSELL, I finished my time working on MoD R/Royce diesels with Hylomar as an approved product------------even better when you get it issued for free !! Those days are long-gone now (and my "stocks" have depleted as well !! )

Hi Nigel, I have used Hylomar on loco's that have come into the Pumphouse for repair, both members and club engines. As uuu said in a previous posts it is nice to use but do follow the instructions on the pack. Talking of Simplex's we had the clubs Super Simplex in on Wednesday evening for a report on work needing to be done. this engine was built in 1994 as a Club effort and proved its worth over the years. regards JtP

Hi JtP, many thanks for the comment - I haven't seen the package yet but will be sure to read the instructions. Great to hear that a 1994 Simplex is still doing well - hope the repairs aren't to serious. Has she done many hours of running ?
I'm really looking forward to getting mine into steam later this year - currently making the Safety Valves and learing about making springs! Really enjoying the learning curve(s)
Regards Nigel

Great to hear that a 1994 Simplex is still doing well - hope the repairs aren't to serious. Has she done many hours of running ? Oh, yes - many many hours. I shouldn't leak John's official report - but I will. All the motionwork is a "rattling" fit - but not disastrously. Crossheads are loose in the guide bars, which is a bit more worrying. One blow-down has lost its outlet pipe, so is rusting the frame in the vicinity. And so on. I was no great respecter of Martin Evans, but this loco had contributions in the building from novice and expert (I wince when I look at any part I made - I don't think there are many left) and has been used and abused (and occasionally crashed) by a great range of drivers. It's a testament to its ruggedness that it's in such good shape. Wilf
