I'm fairly well along with building my Simplex and have now made a start on the smokebox door. I've got the drawings, the words and music and also copies of ME with some of the missing items from the main drawings. My problem is that I can't seem to see any details of the smokebox door hinge pivots and pin arrangement. Do I (a) need to go to Specsavers or (b) ask if anybody has a drawing/dimensions of these items? This is my first full go at building a loco and I suspect that this is one of those things that Mr. Evans breezily dismisses as being "made in the usual way." Just so, as long as you know what the usual way is.

Hi "grandfathertyke" (wow - an interesting handle - sure there's a story in there somewhere!) (a) No - you don't need to go to Specsavers - there is very little detail on the "official" drawings or words and music. I did a thing I was told you should never do - I measured the bits off the drawing (LO 935 sheet 4) My pin is a piece of 1/8" silver steel, with a bit of 1/4" silver steel screwed on top for the head. The hinge pivots are approx 9/32" square with a 1/4" hole for the pin and a short piece of 6BA studding loctited in and then the assembly screwed into tapped holes in the smoke box ring, lined up with the pin and loctited in place. The pin ends of the hinge "bars", that are rivetted to the door, were annealed and bent around the pin. The trickiest bit, for me, was rivetting on the support brackets for cross bar - the rivetts came VERY close to interferring with the door sealing onto the ring - but I think I've managed it. If you need any more info/pictures, do say! Good luck Nigel

Thanks for the info., Nigel. A neat way of doing the job, which I shall follow. The "handle" refers to two aspects of my life - I'm a grandad, but also a season ticket holder of (too) many years' standing at Barnsley Football Club (aka The Tykes). This latter proves two things about me; one is that I know very little about football and the other is that I have an unlimited capacity for suffering.

Cheers - hanks for the explanation! I hadn't realised that Barnsley Football Club were known as The Tykes - learn something new every day! I have seen pictures of at least one Simplex where the two pivots shown on the drawing are replaced by one "full length" piece - possibly with two fixing studs - that might be easier to make and fit - not sure. regards Nigel
