I wish to get some laser cutting, but can't find a company that will use the drawings I have, which are in solidworks SLDPRT format. It seems that most cutters use DWG orDXF files. Can mine be converted? Or does anyone know a laser company that accepts Solidworks? Pete

Peter,
I am guessing if you’re asking you’re not a SW users? You can produce DWG/FX drawings from inside Solidworks, with your model drawing open just go File>new>drawing. If you don’t have the software I am sure someone here can do it for you.

Thanks. I have "read only" installed, is that enough or do I need the full deal? I did not do the drawings myself, waaaay beyond me

Try converting your files online at www.zamzar.com (free), they seem to be able to convert hundreds of file formats. Check to see if your required formats are there. Deeja

Peter,
This doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
Follow the link to my home page (the little house on the left) then send me the drawings and I will squirt them into a DFX for you.
I don’t use the 2D side of SW much if at all so thought more competent people might offer. Don’t worry I can use it I just choose not too, I just cannot quite cut the umbilical with AutoCAD or now draftsight for 2D.

Jim has come to the rescue. Thanks a million, Jim. Thanks also to Steen Rudberg in Finland, who took my original hand drawn sketches and made them digital. As you can see it wasn't exactly "drawing 101" Pete Attachments:

And this is what it was all about. Panel fresh back from the laser people. Thanks everybody, a real "round the world" effort! ( A US forum, picked up by a Danish designer, converted in UK, for an Aussie train build.) Pete Attachments:
