Hi.
After being away from the PC a bit recently I wonder if there are any rumours doing the rounds about a possible re-location and dates for the exhibition postponed from Olympia2. Stan.

'To be announced' was the last I saw in ME.

When we enquired about possible conflicts with our own show (Guildford in July) we were promised it would not impact us as they were looking around April/May. Which strikes me they are going to have to get their skates on.

Umm, May would be the same month as Harrogate and April is large Scale at Leamington. There are other rallies fitted in around these date so they aint got much place to play with at all. Andy

Hmmmmm.. That would be interesting. The chap that was down to organise the Olympia2 show is of course the organiser of Harrogate I believe.
I must admit I have never been able to get to Harrogate much to my embarrasment, is the venue they use big enough for any additions however small they may be. Still I suppose the Traders etc already go there so it would not be that much more to fit together.
Be interesting to hear eventually what the decision is on this.
Stan.

All this talk of Harrogate makes the exhibition at AP more attractive.

Although I live in Brighton I try to go to Harrogate every year. It's pretty good already, I can't see what adding the 'Olympia' one woud do for it.
Early March in London would be my choice - doesn't clash with anything, and within easy reach of half the country.
What would be really nice is a good one in Newcastle or Scotland. That part of the world (ie North of Harrogate) doesn't seem well served at the moment. Nice excuse to see a different part of Britain.

Harrogate uses the Yorkshire Showgound Stan; its huge and can accomadate any expansion. There are multiple acres to run around the road vehicles and traction engines. Lots of halls and places that are not used 90% of the year. I might be biased, but Harrogate is 200 miles from London, and 200 miles from Edinborough. As a central location I hope it grows and grows. The cramped conditions in Alexandra Palace, Olympia, or elsewhere only really suit those living in SE England. Regards, John

Must admit AP looks interesting with all the hype tooks like the old wembley days of multiple kits, ME, Plastic, Aircraft and Tanks but I will wait and see. My orignal intention was end of December. I keep saying that I would like to go to Harrogate but would have to make a weekend of it as Kent to Harrogate is not a quick trip.

Stan, Having been to the Harrogate exhibition a few times now,it is extremely good (IMHO),if you can get along to it. There seemed to be plenty of room there (unlike, say,at The Fosse-IMHO again) as it has been organised in the past. The traders were in one hall, the model displays and more traders were to be found in the second hall. The refreshment facilities were very good too. I doubt there is a lot more room for expansion of the exhibition within the existing halls without causing the overcrowding that happens at some other exhibitions.

Laurie,
The Yorkshire Showground hosts the Yorkshire Show (unsurprisingly) which is the largest agricultural show in the country.
The two halls currently used are the tip of the iceburg. There is extensive outdoor space, and lots of other halls scattered around the site. And, as the Yorkshire Show only occupies 5 days a year, they are desperate to get more utilisation. They hold a classic car show there every year that uses much much more than the ME organisers do. I just hope that the organisers of the ME exhibition get even bolder.
It may be a long way from Kent, but Ally Pally or whatever is a long way for our Scots enthusiast's, or Irish enthusiasts that can fly into Leeds/Bradford airport easily.
A centralised "super" exhibition would be ideal IMHO, rather than going around the rather disappointing efforts that are organised now. A morning's interest at best.....
Regards,
John

Ahh, but can us southerners get a passport into Yorkshire, or do we have to buy a whippet and a cloth cap? lol

No need for a whippet, there are plenty there already, but a cloth cap would be champion !

Regards, John I quite agree John, there is plenty of room in the other halls on the site at Harrogate, now you mention it. So it would indeed be possible to house a much larger exhibition on the site, though not in the halls that are normally used. Maybe there is a case for moving the Model Engineering Exhibition to either the Home Counties,(ie norf o' Watford!) or to the Midlands area, where it would be fairly central for most people. Hopefully it wouldn't then clash with the Harrogate or Midlands Model Engineering shows.

The shows round Christmas in London are too close together so loosing one does not seem such a disaster to me. Why don’t ME and EM bury the hatchet and have a joint show. That might stop the editorial sniping which EM seems particularly prone too.
As to Harrogate, I would say it has the potential to be the best show in the UK if it keeps improving. Lou Rex, how I think, started the Harrogate show off has now introduced a summer show at the Pickering show ground so I think us Northerners are being well catered for.

Hi Must agree with Jim, I like Harrogate, it not local to me I live in the midlands, but always seams to be a friendly show with good selection of traders especially the smaller ones, who we don't often see and has a good model display, I would recommend it to anybody, Not been to the pickering show yet but will this year, may make a weekend of it a go on the NYMR at the same time. Regards Nigel

Guys,
I went to what must have been the last MEX at Olympia. It included not only ME stuff but also model car, plane and boats. It was great to see all the different ways of wasting time and I managed to get to four o'clock before getting really hacked off and wanting out. Now a days it's three o'clock and I've well had it.
Anyway, all I heard after was folk whinging about the purity of Model Engineering had been polluted by all the cars, boats and planes stuff. Theres no pleasing folk, I had a great time.
The next year it all moved to Sandown and the start of the sad story.
