Hi Everybody My wife has kindly offered to buy me an engine drivers hat, ;D even though it looks like it will be a long while till I have an engine to drive, however I haven't had a great deal of joy finding a supplier, anyone any suggestions. Ron

The Longleat Railway at Warmister sell Locomens hats. I haven't used one of theirs so can't speak of their standard. The other supplier that I have used for other items is J N Beesley 19 Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamstead, HP4 2LJ. Try either of these, neither have a website so its an SAE to get their catalogue and off you go.

Ron, Saw them at NYMR shop during the summer. Looked OK quality-wise, but the top appeared to be of plastic......suppose that's what's used nowadays for the 'greasetop'. Perhaps GeorgeRay can opine. Just had a look at their online shop, they are £30. A bit pricey but the money goes to a good cause. www.shoppersworld.co.uk/store/product.asp?s=411&d=2297&p=20921&c=2&s1=0&s2=0&s3=0(Looks like NYMR use ShoppersWorld to provide online selling now). Ron, I bought my "greasetop" from that guy that sells insurance at the Harrogate Exhibition last year (I forget the name of his firm - Walker Midgely, is it?). It was under £20. I also have an American style hat that I bought (much to my own amazement!) when I visited the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania in 2005 (but that would be boasting). I decided on this only after seeing that both the driver (engineer?) and fireman were wearing these same hats, so they must be OK.
Cheers, Eric C.

My other half (from Leeds) bought this soft Southerner a 'proper cloth cap' - which she described (accurately IMHO) as 'Champion'.
Can't imagine wearing anything else on my head.

I am lucky as I have a gen-u-iron BR Greasetop, which was worn by my dad's auntie's uncle (I think) Luckily I have a small head, otherwise it would be an rather tight fit...

Walker Midgley Tel 0114 250 2770, Supply Greasetops as well as insurance on Min Railways.
Usual disclaimer. other than that one of my customers had his grandfathers' "Grease top" (ex Nine Elms), blown by the wind into the 'works' of my Steam Roller. Granny had threatened him with a rather nasty fate if it got damaged. (It was totalled). W M supplied a replacement the next day which we then spent some time 'distressing'. I suspect her failing eyesight coupled with her obvious disinclination to approach anything oily and smelly too closely, saved his bacon or whatever she had threatened to relieve him of

Ericcee + Steamjohn,
Do the W. Midgley hats have a genuine 'greasetop', or the plastic sort of top?

Lurkio - OK - I admit it looks and feels like a plastic top! And I must also admit that I rarely wear it, preferring an old denim "boating" cap that I bought almost 40 years ago, and which I now regard as something of a close friend!

MM Ahhh is "proper" lad.. ignore the southern puftahs with their obsession with greasy heads (natural to them) .. don't be seen in anything else. Your Whippet is speedy enough to run alongside, or it can sit on the tender giving you advice about Yorkshire coal rather than the clog wearing stuff. 8 quid off Leeds market, and very stylish. £25 indeed..... Take notice of "err indoors"...

John Remember even Yorkshire men are southern softies to us Jocks, but we look like Paw Broon with a proper cloth cap on. ;D

John I've already got one, never thought of using it for engine driving though maybe not a good idea though, alcohol usually involved when it's worn ;D Ron

J-L: Unfortunately err indoors' whippet's accent is too broad for me to understand - it tends to just point at the correct pile of black stuff.
Never seen a whippet in clogs; perhaps Leeds is too cosmopolitan. maybe I should try Wakefield or Royston Vasey.
