Hi everyone. Looking through various sets of pictures, including the Modelworks series, I am puzzled by a small detail. On the 'front' of the tender for a 'Brit' class locomotive there are of course some doors. On the 'Perrier' drawings I have these doors are secured by three swing bar type locking devices. On other series of pictures the top centre set of doors, along with the door above the water scoop winding handle is secured by a smallish sliding bolt. Also on the drawings I have there are shown hinges on both sides of the main doors, on others only on one side, with some sort of locking catch on the other. Although not a builder to be put off by these variations it would be nice to know which is 'correct' and which is not. I was told some months ago that Modelworks proclaimed that their parts were correct as they were taken from the tender sitting behind 'Brittania', my informant then advised them that 'that' tender was not the one for the 'Brit' but another type of locomotive parked nearby, no comment was the reply he received. I can only listen (and read)at this stage. Any ideas welcomed, while there is still time to change. Stan.

Stan, I'm building the Modelworks Britannia, based on 70013 'Oliver Cromwell'. I've modified the door latches and hinges to match the prototype, currently being restored at Loughborough. If you take a look at my website at www.britanniabuilder.co.uk, you'll find photographs and a discussion of these points on the Kit 4 page. Regards, John

Hi Stan Have a look at or www.92214.co.uk then click photos followed by tender. Failing that pop down to your local preserved railway. Andy

Thanks for the replies from all concerned. Although there are other obvious differences to tenders used on the 9F and the one shown currently being used behind 'Britannia', for instance there are no small swing doors shown for access to the footplate, also there are no grab rails actually fitted to the sides of the front end of the tender, both are part of the cab assembly, the issue of the catches and hinges has become a little clearer.
Stan.

Hi Stan The front wings on the tender are one of the subtle diffrences between BR1(4250 gallons),BR1A (5000 galons) and BR1G (5000 gals)and BR1H(4250gals). The other main one is the fall plate. The origianl Brits had a cab that was mounted of the back of the boiler, the idea being to try and give the crew a more comfortable enviromnt in which to work. However real life proved them to be drafty and dirty. Various experiments were tried to solve this but eventually a complete redesign was executed and the wings appeared on the front of the tenders at he same time as the Brits received a more conventional cab. Depending upon which engine you are modeling will decide which tender you need to model. The tender front locker arrangment was the same on all the inset bunker tenders to my knowledge. For info: Brits 70000-24, 70030-44 all had BR1 as built (no flaps, 4250 gal, low water dome) Brits 70025-9 had BR1A (no flaps, 5000 gal, high water dome) Brits 70045-54 had BR1D (high sided, with flaps and fall plate,4725 gals and a coal pusher!)

Thanks Andy, never had it explained to me such as you have. Although the original model was being built as to represent the 'Iron Duke', that was when the original builder, a friend of mine, was alive in Ontario. I brought it back home to the UK last year and have decided to try to finish it. It will be a fair representation of the class, using whatever parts he had made and whatever I decide to make and use to complete it. finally it will be named after him, 'Sir Aubrey Gooch', he will also have gained a Knighthood, with a number outside of the completed range as built for BR, after all it is not one of theirs! Just that I keep looking at various sources of detail information and find some of these questions. Many thanks for you help on this. Stan. (I have to keep reminding myself, 'it is only a hobby)
