Chuckle---chuckle---Yes, me too !!.....There is a steel tube brazed across the width of the ash pan's inside coinciding with those two "outrigger" pieces....That way the dump pin glides smoothly through and out the other side of the mainframes by approx 1/4"..It's end is slightly tapered as well.... As I mentioned earlier you can come "on shed", have a "wash and Brush-up" and be back on duty within the hour quite easily....

Nice idea guys - I've reached the "grate/ash pan" stage on my Simplex and will have a go at making this mod.! Looking at "4930hagley's" pictures, it looks as if the rear end of the ash pan might extend a bit rearwards of the firebox - is that correct ? Also, is the dump pin the only thing holding the ash pan (& therefore the grate) in place ?? Thanks for any hints to making it, Nigel

I can't see any problem with extended ash pan , yes the pin holds all , the idea is you pull the pin and all drops including what is left of the fire .
