Hello, my names Lucy, I have joined this forum in the hope that you are able to help me, I have inherited this beauty from my grandad, I can only remember driving it when I was younger , I have some fantastic memories and am hoping you can tell me a bit about it or point me in the right direction. All I know is that it's called a simplex (is that correct?) and it doesn't have a current boiler test. Because I have minimum knowledge of this locomotive, I would like to know my options, like is it worth putting it through the boiler test, how much and what it entails. In the long run I'd have to sell it as I don't have the time, expertise or track any more.what would it be worth before/after the test Hope this makes sense. Thanks for reading.

hi lucy,
yes it is a SIMPLEX. see if you can find the boiler certificates from previous years or else the club where it was run will be able to provide the boiler certificate history for you - join them - and get it re-tested. dont tell them you want to sell it. get a certificate (hydraulic and steam test) run the loco and take plenty of pics and video, then if you decide to sell it you have plenty of evidence of the loco running plus the paperwork. without a boiler certificate the value of the loco is considerably reduced.
good luck!
cheers, julian

Hi Lucy To give you an idea of price have a look at the station road site www.stationroadsteam.com/stock%20pages/5937/index.htm is a Simplex he is selling at the moment for £3450. There are other people who buy and sell these. Julian is right you would get a better price with a boiler certificate you never know someone at the club your grandfather used to go to might want to buy it. Good luck Andrew

Thanks for the help,
I'll ask around family if he was in a club, but he had a track around his lake/pond at home, he occasionally want to steam shows with his trains and stationary engines.but I'm not 100% sure he was in a club.
Thanks again

Hello LUCY........ yes, I also would agree with all of the previous postings...I have a "weakness" for dear old Simplex ( I have 3 in various states of non-running!!!!) and to my way of thinking they are an ideal beginners loco and/or a great club engine... I think JULIAN's advice is particularly sound re}-- It'll attract a better price if certificated and, preferably seen running under steam as well....£3,000 ---- £3,500, maybe for a well detailed, low mileage one ??........... I'd LOVE to put an offer on yours BUT------ 'er indoors is on the warpath !! Sorry !!-------- Good luck with the sale and please, do keep us updated ??............PS Have you ever thought about having a go at building one yourself ??......Maybe a kit one ??.....OR, keep your Grandad's one, join the Northampton club and learn how to drive it and maintain it ??......Plenty of room for the ladies these days, eh lads ??
