Can anyone tell me what diameter the winding drum flanges (or overall diameter of the drum assembly) are (approx all the same? ) on the various John Hainings Fowler ploughing engines?? Thanks

Hanning's BB1 and Superbas are also both 10 5/8"
(Full size they were: 5' 4" = 10.66" true to scale)

Are you sure Jo
On the Z7, Z7S and Superba the lower flange is 10 3/4 and the upper which incorporates the gear is 11 5/8" OD

The gear is bolted on for the class V and i believe that the BB/BB1 use the same drum.

Jason: He asked about the drum, which on my original Fowler BB1 drawing shows the same size flange top and bottom. The top flange being integral to the gear but making it a devil to cut.
The gears that bolt on to the drum are different sizes/tooth count on the various engine. Jo

Many thanks for the replies. It was actually the gear I was most interested in, as I had assumed, as mentioned, that this was an integral part of the drum. I did not realise the models had a seperate gear bolted on!!!

In the class V articals it says at one point that it is bolted on and also in the same series that it is integral with dummy bolts fitted! But the gear is 96 teeth x 8 DP. OD is 12.25".

I got the impression Fang wanted to know the largest diameter he would have to turn and he did ask about all hainings ploughing engines.
One thing with the separate ring gears is they are very thin and could be a difficult thing to hold if you are going to avoid distortion

Is the winding drum the largest gear on a ploughing engine?? Or is the gear wheel attached to the rear wheel larger in dia?? I'm wanting to find out the largest diameter gear I will need to cut on a traction engine!!
Thanks again
