I'm after some advice and guidance, I have a Model Works Black Five with a failed boiler. I'm getting a new boiler made for it to the Don Young design by Devon Steam Boilers. I've worked out that the boiler barrel needs to be extended by an inch as the Model Work one is longer. I've made a cardboard mock-up of the Don Young boiler and placed it on the frames, and worked out what needs to be changed etc. What I'm really after is advice and guidance on what modifications should I ask for with the new boiler, hence why I've created this thread in the boiler design section than the Model Works section. I have a rough list:
1) Bushes for the fire hole door, and the design a LMS style doors etc - Any ideas of drawings? I recall EIM had a design but I don't have a copy. 2) Regulator design - DY design used the LBSC Disc design, with holes drilled in the barrel to mount the regulator. I'm not keen on either, as my L1 has the disc regulator. I've been looking at the Gordon Smith upside safely valve design - which looks good, but would there be a more suitable design for a Black Five!! ?? Or what that be prefect? 3 ) Anything else.... ?

hi dem132, i would advise copying the details of the don young design throughout without variation. i drove the first loco built to don's BLACK FIVE design. no need to alter don's excellent BLACK FIVE boiler design at all. cheers, julian

Does anyone know how to obtain a copy of the Don Young boiler design?

Hi Robmort, I'm busy hunting for drawings etc myself! I've been given a scanned copy of the boiler articles from the Don Young LLAS, the copy is readable, PM and I'll email you the PDF. I do have a incomplele set of a Black Five drawings, luckly one of them has the boiler, but thats a hard copy only. Are you building a Black Five as well?

I've PM'd you. In fact I'm building a 3.5" King, but this design is from 1938 and is rarely mentioned on this board or elsewhere and the boiler issues may be similar to Doris (a Black 5), as several things leave something to be desired.

hi rob, Reeves do the drawings. you have to buy them LOL why would a 1938 3.5"g KING design of boiler have 'several things that leave something to be desired' and 'similar' to dons' BLACK 5 design of circa 1980? cheers, julian

Julian, I guess that in 1938 some construction aspects might not meet more recent practice, and the person from whom I bought the rest of the chassis is a professional model boiler constructor and advised me not to follow the boiler design. For example there may be too many tubes of too small a diameter, and also the top of the firebox and tubes seem too high in the barrel. I meant the boiler issues with Doris (which is after all a "Black 5")which have been mentioned elsewhere, rather than with Don Young's version.
