Members of the forum will be saddened to hear that Pete Rich, Taff on this forum, passed away at the weekend. Pete, well known for his GWR knowledge and expertise so freely shared with others, was president of the Newport Society and also a major contributor to the Great Western Society having been involved in the rescue of locos from Barry and more recently producing invaluable drawings for new build projects. He will be sadly missed by many folk. - Pete Thomas

Such a great loss to the Model Engineering world. His knowledge of the GWR in particular, and his wonderful loco drawings will be sorely missed. Gone With (much) Regret. My condolences too, to his family and friends.

A real shame.
One of the Great Names in Model Engineering. I am just glad that he spent some time here imparting some of his knowledge to the rest of us.

This has upset me even though I never had the privilege of meeting the man in person, Pete helped me greatly when I first joined this forum and sent me all of his articles and those that he had collected from other authors on injectors which helped me greatly in understanding these things and which I shall use when making my own when I get to that stage. I am truly saddened by this news.....R.I.P Pete.... Pete

As a young lad reading my fathers "Model Engineer" magazine I remember those contributions by "Taff" and the wealth of knowledge so readily imparted...I bet right now he's discussing the finer points of long-travel valves with "George" (Churchward).... "Bill" (Stanier).... and the others...I hope the following is ok to post?? >>>>>>>>>> www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kUnCwV3AYE ----------- Farewell, old friend...

Have now heard from Pete Rich's daughter Helen, the funeral service will be a Humanist service at the Newport (Gwent) Crematorium on Thursday 20th February at 1pm. There will be a reception for friends and family in the Golf Club which is almost adjacent to the Crematorium. Hope a number of us may be present to show our respects and support the family, particularly Pete's wife Maureen and daughter Helen. Pete Thomas

I am happy to say that I met Pete on several ocasions and my most memorable being his visit to Minehead with some of his very loyal friends for a footplate journey down the line. Pete had helped the railway with some of the design work converting their 51XX into a 2-6-0 tender locomotive.
Such a tallented man and ahead of the current thinking at the time with to scale locomotives that work with his superb Castle and Star design, also the Ivat. These were started in the very beginning of Engineering in Minature and gave us hope for several years of articles, alas he was let down and both of these stopped. I have a full set of drawings for the Star and once a year have a look through in admiration.
A close friend of Petes told of his battle with a bank and the loss of a house he had built himself which showed his skills beyond making superb models. I too am facing one of these nasty institutions that continue to drag our economy ever downward. And changing the name back and splitting into two will not help my feelings towards them!!! The proud address apearing at the bottom of his drawings then it changes.
Farewell dear friend and thank you for enriching all our Model Engineering lives with your designs inspiration and help so freely given.
David 3 and 1/2 miles from the Reading track.

Sad news.
I hope his nearest take some consolation from the very high esteem he is held in among the ME community across the globe, and his wonderful legacy in models, drawings, and generously given words of advice and help.
Like David, I have a full set of 'Taff' drawings (mine are for his Castle) and one day I hope to do them justice.
