Today I had a very successful first air-test on my Simplex. It ran well in both forward and reverse, at all speeds. It is my first attempt at a loco and to say that I am pleased is putting it very mildly. From first opening the air-control it responded magnificently. I got a lot of information during the build from the archived threads on this site, and would like to thank all those whose contributions helped me to this success. What a splendid resource this is, and how generous are people in sharing their knowledge. Many, many thanks to you. The boiler is due for delivery this week - I'd have loved to have a crack at this myself but know that I lack the skill. I have ordered from John Gaunt at Devon Steam Boilers, this because of the job he made on a Titch boiler for a loco shared by myself and a friend. Now for the platework and boiler fitting. And I wonder what I might build next...........

Thanks chaps. I too raised a glass or three last night, and have a mild regret this morning.

"Bloody Well Done" me hearty !! As a fellow Simplex owner might I welcome you to the club ??--------Is it the BASIC or the SUPER version that you're building..?? Forgive me if I'm asking a repeated item but have you made your ash pan removable ?? ( It can be done and makes a world of difference when lighting-up or disposing .....)................PS, only a MILD regret ?? not a WHISKY or RUM one then ?? ( Sorry, poor play on words there ).......

Hello Hagley - ashpan one of the next jobs, but I had intended to make it removable. The loco is the Basic version. I thought of the "mild" reference as I was posting, but the truth is that it was a lethal mix of red wine and something that my wife bought that called itself Seasonal Lager with Berry Flavours. Under normal circumstances nothing would have induced me to touch the latter, but that was no normal evening. Never again, though. (He said).

Congratulations young man - it surely is a magical moment when your loco comes to life! Thanks also to "4930Hagley" for the piccys of his removable pan - I've still got to make mine and I do like the idea of being able to remove it when required. Yes, this forum, with its extensive archives, is a wonderful resource - many thanks to those who run it. Nigel

Thanks for the reminder re the pic, Hagley. I was aware of it from my trawling through the site, but had forgotten the details. It looks good.

Works a treat !!---------- On my mates Simplex we have actually bought the engine into the steaming bays with 80psi on the clock...dropped the fire and re-fitted the grate....lit a fresh fire...rodded the tubes and was back in service after about 1.5 hours ( Two of us with our set duties--as per full size )------------ Disposal at the end of the day is also quick and easy............. EDIT, the grate actually sits up inside the foundation ring to start with....the pan is held up against the bottom of the foundation ring by a pin passing across the width via a steel tube, then clipped into postion on the outside of the frame...The grate is then tapped down onto the top of the pan....easily achieved from underneath when oiling up etc.......
