Wonder if anyone can help with this.
I bought an ML7 (S/n k3131) in very sound condition but without a 4 jaw chuck, I have been offered a mint Pratt Bernard 4 jaw by a friend of a friend who had been using it on an ML7. Tried to fit it on my lathe and the thread is quite wrong on the backing plate.
Were there two different thread pitches used on later ML7's mine is a very early one, or has his or my lathe got a none standard spindle thread.
Have researched the usual sites to check this out a there is no mention of a change of thread.
Secondly could I just change the back plate and if so are there pitfalls in the alignment of the back plate?

Odd, AFAIK the spindle nose thread is the same on all Myford Series 7 lathes produced from 1946 to now, apart from the recent big bore model: 1-1/8 x 12 tpi right hand Whitworth. In fact, this has always been a selling point, since it means that equipment (including chucks) is transferrable from machine to machine.

Yes you can fairly easily make a new back plate. You can get part machined ones from many of the usual suspects where the bit that mates with the spindle is machined. The bit that mates with the back of the chuck needs machining. www.lathes.co.uk/latheparts/page7.html tells you how to do it.

What a wonderful site this is no sooner have you posted a problem but you have the answer.
Thanks MM good to have my suspicions sorted I also need a face plate etc and was beginning to think I might have problems with my spindle thread.
Looked at the lathe site before I posted but did not find the link to making a back plate fit, it looks a bit technical but I will have a go if I can buy the chuck for the right price.
Thanks for the input.

You're welcome - it's always worth calling Myford. You will generally end up talking to someone knowledgeable and helpful.

Someone has been selling backplates, some part machined for the ML7, on Ebay.

Check the thread on your spindle make sure it is 11/8" x 12 TPI r/hand as i have had a chuck that is difficult to start on the spindle but goes on eventually i do not know if it is the chamfer at the start of the thread that causes this.

And they have collet holders for putting ER32 collets on a Myford as well. A shame that Santa is not expected for some time but certainly one for the list.

Handy to have tho' Terry esp for someone who swapped from a 3MT spindle lathe to a Myford and has a box of ER32 collets he can only use on his mill.
I'll send the children up the chimney a bit before Christmas.

Is it a Whitworth thread form? It is a UNF size. I obtaineed a 11/8 UNF tap from Tracys some years ago and have always used it after screcutting most of the thread. I have had no trouble but there again the UNF at 60Degrees would probably fit on the Whit thread of 12 tpi. Is it definitelt Whitworth form?

Update from the originator.
Having re read all this before I actually ordered the back plate I had the brainwave that how ever illogical if his 4 jaw did not fit mine would my 3 jaw fit his and surprise surprise it did, his face plate fitted mine and my face plate fitted his.
Measured the threads and there is no difference, but the lead part of the thread on my ML7 is thicker than his and is slightly different in shape, took a light file to it and Bingo, the 4 jaw now fits.
Thanks for all the help and info I hope it will be of use to any one else with the same problem.
