Fit and forget get's my vote too. I'll have to do the same, I've only got a scrap of small stuff.
Looking at ebay, it's pretty dear if you only buy a short length. How about I buy 500mm of 40mm diameter and sell you as much as you need pro-rata?

it's been especially effective for me because all my locos have been second hand, usually with a slight belling in worn gunmetal valve bores, so massive amounts of work involved in getting them parallel again before being able to use a close fitting metal valve bobbin. PTFE takes it up very nicely so you don't have to go there. It's one of those situations where you see and hear of so many locos struggling with leaky valves/pistons, and the control issues they cause, with asthmatic wheezy sounding locos, that I always try to pass on my happy experiences. When it's tried, its always so rewarding to see the grin of the owner who's finally put those issues to bed and can forget about all that messing about. Yes Roger, I also am amazed that it's done any other way now, but I can appreciate the motivation to model closely to prototype. It was the success with PTFE that got me thinking about Vesconite, and lo and behold it's been a similar experience so far, will report back again end of season of course.

That sounds very doable :-) although a quick look just popped up 150mm of 40mm dia bar at a shade under £19
There is also some PEEK at £16.50 ish
oddly the expensive stuff is actually the cheapest though at£44 for 500mm
i am more than happy to buy on some if you get more than you need
