I have not built one of these and have no connection with the following suppliers but they do supply parts for 5" Class 08 or similar. Dan Jeavons Steam & Diesel Castings. Tel.01562-754530, no website that I know of but he does supply parts for the virtually identical Class10 ( It was only the engine that was different in full size). Blackgates Model Engineering do Charlatan so probably spply motors for it. Compass House www.compass-house.co.uk/frames.htm also supply a 5" 08 Hope this is of use. Richard

you could try parkside electronics in nelson Lancashire, didn't mention it before as I've no contact details or experience of their products.

I'm sorry I've been away. That applies both here and to those who have written to me off-list. I will reply to those who have written off-list in the course of the next few days and if you wrote to me in detail you'll get a detailed answer. As for class 08 motors there are two main possibilities in my experience. First you can use Lucas heater fan motors. I don't have the part number in front of me but I can get it fairly quickly. They are as fitted to many British cars in the 60 and 70's. The example given is the Mini I think but I rather think my old taxi has 2 of them Personally I don't use them any more. I use shower pump motors. There have been a number of suppliers over the years. At one time they were cheaply available from Bull Electrical in Brighton and from J & N Factors. Should I be in the market for any more (I'm not since I've a 'shop full of them) I'd speak to Robin Neighbour www.model-engineering.co.uk/ . The shower pump motors are pretty well a bolt in replacment for the Lucas motors but more powerful and more resistant to abuse. If you need more info let me know

Hello there John A couple of years ago I was searching for motors for rebuilding our club loco at Carlisle (Hammonds Pond) I hit upon the type used in the elctric scooters you see for sale in bike shops and the like These range in power from 100 watt upwards, the ones I bought are 600watt each, for a 7 1/4 build and with a little bit of rework I reckon I can get them to fit inside the frames. I did some bench tests on them and they really do give the full rated power. I bought a 250watt unit for trials and it'll fit nicely between 5" frames. Just feed "electric scooter" into google-uk and you'll get loads of suppliers who also sell the motors as "spare" parts regards Jack

I unfortunatly found Dan Jevons expensive and inaccurate having asked him the size of his boiler drawing for the De-winton, it turned out to be 7" in dia and 1,600 completed. A 6" is currently 900 so much better on the pocket.

Hello again John Last night I was window shopping through e-bay (always a mistake) and came across some 12v electric motors going cheap. £5-99 each. Rating is currently unspecified but believed to be 400watt - I believe they were made by Bosch for a lawnmower system. Use the code 180104119519 in an e-bay seqarch and you'll see what I mean. If when you get there you also feed the Bosch type number into google you'll get some very positive comments from prior buyers. regards Jack

Car radiator cooling fans are great at about 250/300 watts. They are also easy to pick up for nothing! Although reversible they have a preferred direction of rotation - at least the ones I'm using do, marked by an arrow cast into one of the end plates

Another good source of motors is www.distel.co.uk . I do have a connection: they are near where I live and once (nearly 10 years ago) they gave my elder daughter a soft toy.

parkside electronics are a wonderfull supplier of parts for electric locos. Just bought 2 x 12v 250watt motors. 4 x wheel blanks and associated gear wheels. The chap there is most helpfull. prices are great. they also stock speed controllers, a lot cheaper than 4qd. Parkside will be at the harrogate exhibition in may. Anyone else building electric locos lets here from you and pics. There is very little info on building electric locos as ive scoured the net to help me on my way, but most help so fsr came from Parkside, (usual disclaimer) no connection just wanted to sing their praises.
