Just in case you had not heard of this, there are lots of 3 1/2" locos gathering for a revolution against those nasty 5" things that drive us off the track, at Southampton Riverside Park this Saturday 2 August and I am told the grub is on the house!!!
Regards A friend of 3 1/2" gauge

Midland.
I don't think you should attack all the 5" brigade, we are friends of the wee fellas too.
I have exercised my views on what I call the "sub-gauge" engines before and have advocated the resurgence of these 5", 3 1/2" and maybe a 21/2" if they exist in our local area in New Zealand. I think that the point is more the running for pleasure verses the running for revenue. I have no issue with the 71/4" ground level steamers as to some degree they can make our part of the hobby more pleasurable in that you will not be required to haul with small engines to earn the club funds and you can steam purely for fun and enjoyment yourself.
The other aspect I see is raised track v's ground level. I for sure have no intention to sit atop a box on wheels behind a small loco. I want pleasure and comfort in my hobby and view the sight of a driver sitting on a tender box trolley as a looking a little silly. Sure when 5" and 71/4" are combined on the same track there is no choice but it would not be my cup of tea.
So...please include the ( some) 5" engines in your plan. I am sure my new acquired 3.5" Atlantic and my cute 5" Railmotor are happy to run together.

Hi Hayden Apparently the 3 1/2" went smoothly as in the english sense, pissed with rain am and scorched pm but all were happy. The litle ones appreciated a bit of space as in "cut some slack buddy", so all were happy!
Cheers D

Jolly good show. A dash of rain will not ward off any English enthusiasm.
Any photos published for us to see?
What was the general consensus as to the success. Is it the start of a revolution?
All done.

John.
Will await your newsletter with interest.
Was it a drivers day or a open to public running event??
Sometimes it is nice just to do you own thing without all those silly questions we get asked a million times over. How fast does it go Mister?? Yes that black stuff is coal.... Whats coal??
Sorry my engine does not have a USB port!
A great hobby.

Hi Hayden. It was a drivers' day: plenty of onlookers but the smelly public was kept the other side of the rail! John

John.
I do agree that there should be days for the "club" and days for the public.
We have just done a boiler test and steam run and to have no "visitors" is just blissful.,Honestly I get the most enjoyment at the track when there are just one or two of us running, no public and only a handful of other boating member ( we have a boating contingent). Sometimes one just wants to do what they joined the club for originally. It is an escape from the week of work and time out. If I can get a day, or part day when I know there is likely to be minimal interuption, and the weather is fine I go for it. Other times the club operates kids parties or model sailing events and it is just an interruption. I stay away.
So some members want to involve the public, fare paying or not, but some of us just want time out from busy work week. Its just our choice.
