Hello all------- as some of you might know I'm building a 5"gauge GWR No111 The Great Bear.......As I'm not really comfortable on a PC and time is so precious I won't be writing a "Blow-by-Blow" BLOG account ( It'll just be the same as the others anyway ) but have started this thread just for chat and requests for help etc and you good folk are invited to place ideas, contacts or comments ( I do have a valid Birth Certificate by the way !!LoL..)...................................................... So let me start off with one for our good friend and mentor down in the Valleys, the irrepressible JULIAN....I lifted this from the Scunthorpe MES site and clearly shows a nice Hydrostatic lubricator in the cab of the 1920's built model that they are guardians of up there in Normanby Hall >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I have no idea what one of those looks like... is that like a Panda, that's a Great Bear? Or perhaps it's this one? Maybe a picture to help the likes of me who don't know an A2 from an A4.... that's a paper size in my world...

Nice one BEN !!---------There you are ROGER...Good old Yogi Bear, eh ?? ---Smarter than the average bear, Boo-Boo !!-------------------It was the first ever 4-6-2 ( Pacific) loco built and run in this country...Designed by Mr. G.J. Churchward, Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the Great Western Railway, built at Swindon and was Ex-works in 1908......that is 1 year before the keel of the Titanic was laid down ( just to put it into perspective )------ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_111_The_Great_Bear ---- At the time the bulk of the GWR mainline traffic was being hauled by Mr. Churchward's very successful 4-6-0 "Star" Class locos ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_4000_Class ) and The Bear used a lot of a Star's running chassis, wheels, cylinders etc. in it's construction....... I first thought about this particular engine when working as a contractor at the SVR... A group of 5 of us under the guiding wing of the late Ray Tranter, had decided to pool our efforts and personal abilities and build one of PETER RICH's Castle apiece.......... Initially all went well with model Boilermaker JOHN ELLIS completing (I think) all 5 needed.... Ray's loco became by default the "proof" loco as he had 2 or 3 people helping him....In fact it became the only one to get finished---eventually !!....Meanwhile and for various reasons the others fell by the wayside, one by one......................I was wondering what to do with the various castings, GWR Standard fittings etc. I had accumulated when I happened upon a photo of The Bear in one of my reference books............EXCELLENT !! As the Stars later evolved into the Castles ( and within the 5"gauge world all items such as the cyls, wheels, fitings, safety valve, etc. were almost "Parts Bin" interchangeable )...then this loco, No.111 would be my back-burner project...... More later >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That sounds like the obvious choice then, given your extensive parts bin. It looks like that's going to be quite a size when it's completed. You'll have to get a sidecar for the Gold Wing with tracks you can run it up onto.

Much mirth and laughter here at "Swindon Control" !!--------------- Yes it's on a par with a Duchess, A4, Princess, Merchant Navy, Britannia........mainly because it's their great Grand-dad !!----------Here's the 1920's built one at Normanby Hall, Scunthorpe.....................................

Here's their advert for the DVD they've produced ( Must drop a hint to Joyce for that upcoming X-mas thingy !!)----the B&W photo shows the daughter of the then Lord "X" ( I can't remember his name at the moment---will edit later on )...driving it circa 1930's along the original track ( now gone )..Behind is the Clubhouse that still exists to-day....

Not comfy on a PC??? You're on it ALL THE TIME ? Best way to help the Bear is forget about Roger and Julian, drop the PC in a fish pond and get down the workshop! Pedal to the metal, Nose to the grindstone etc!

The picture of the model on the raised track posted by Hagley is that Kens loco? If so when it was at Portsmouth I drove it! Must be 25 years ago at a guess, Another of our members Frank Morley built the boiler for it , if it was indeed Kens it does look like it went very well. Regards Chris

Regards Chris -----------------------------------------------------Hey-up, I was coming to that episode a bit later on, LoL !!...........I've been faffing about with this as a back-burner job for some years now, and during my earlier research found two things of interest---1) There is a 7.25"Gauge one in a private collection/Railway complex just outside Thame, in Oxfordshire.....I was privileged to be invited for a visit on 2 occasions to view the 90% finished item.... I can't remember the owners name off-hand but he was a renowned racing car engine designer in his earlier days, then later held the patent rights to the toothed-belt design, so I was told......A bit of an eccentric he's alas now driving locos in a more "heavenly" environment!--------2).I had heard of the Re-Boilering on the "grape vine" ( and I believe it was also re-gauged from 4.75 to 5"at the same time ??)...I thought it was done by someone in the Southampton Club, sorry Pompey--my mistake !!.....Not long after I was told that the loco and the old boiler were in the entrance foyer of a well-known miniature steam models factory unit in a small trading estate down in the South west ( Cheddar Models maybe ,--again memory fails me !!)---------I phoned them for an appointment and was allowed to take lots of photos, both of the loco and the old boiler..........Here's a fuller, more accurate account lifted from the Scunthorpe MES site >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Just follow the links >>>>>>>>>http://www.scunthorpesme.co.uk/

[/quote The current Lord 'X' is Sir Reginald Sheffield, 8th Baronet, so I'm assuming that the lady in the photo was the probably the daughter of the 6th Baronet. Samantha Cameron is the eldest daughter of the current Baronet. The family money came from Normanby Park Steelworks (aka Lysights) in Scunthorpe, demolished about 30 years ago.

Hi Alan sorry to spoil your thunder! I think we are both correct asking in the club yesterday it was regauged at Southampton and reboilered in Portsmouth Ken was a member of both clubs! Our track is only 31/2 and 5 so the time I drove it the work had been done, I believe it was 43/4 before the conversion regards Chris

BOO !!!---Good Morning !!-------- I think I'm gone --in the head !!------------- Hello all, have just emerged from the "Drawing Office" ( Used to be the baby's bedroom) after trying to find some definitive ideas for the boiler rear mounting design.........I know I posted these cylinders in a different thread but thought it's better all "under one roof" as it were .........? CHRIS, no Thunder stolen....quite the contrary..If ANYONE has something to add please feel free to do so, no matter how "micronic" it might appear ( Nudge-nudge !!)-------------- meanwhile I have a tender behind ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------schedule.

Lily came home after a long stay in hospital to find my drawing board on the dining room table, a wild collection of Southern OO gauge models belonging to Katie in the sitting room and a lathe in the kitchen sat next to a Speedy Chassis!!! Yes the drawing board is lovely to get the information out and onto paper then its into C. A. D. to see if it all fits together!
I read a lovely run on the Bear that involved two firemen I think to Bristol. No the Philippine Bagassi burning Baldwins have three firemen on the island of Negros it burns so quickly!!Yes I still have my Ormoc city tee shirt!!! One was giving advice to the new man, we have a lovely fire ready, and we may just need three sizable lumps for the journey, do relax! Maybe Mr Churchward was on to something with the boiler? But the restricting her to the main line just was not good enough. IMLEC now there is a thought!!! David.
