That's very interesting Julian, I'm surprised that the rolling resistance is measurable. You certainly were (are) keen!

Yes but that actual format is a company, not volunteers with a few staff. All the members I know do not volunteer, they merely run. The parc was setup to make money in the first place... not for passion But yes, I woulsdn't mind if I lived nearer, and the chair did know this. I even said I would come as often as possible, and he said he didnt want to hear, he wanted me to commit every weekend!

Ok, so look at the Talyllyn where I volunteer, or the Festiniog which is much bigger in the paid department. Quantity of paid staff, significant number of volunteers. If I turn up there to play trains, and expect the paid staff to do all the work, how long do you think it will last? You will not get through life expecting other people to do everything for you, paid or not. Get stuck in and stop moaning.

Anyway.. we seem to have drifted off a bit from Simplexes Although my loco is in fine mechanical condition, cosmetically I find her a bit boring, and I want to add a bit of detail to her. However, as we know it is a freelance design, I was thinking maybe of adding BR yellow lining, BR numbers and BR Logos.( best shop for transfers???) I will re-paint the smokebox, and paint the buffer-beams to red, as they should be. First of all, does anyone know of any real BR Red Locos? All I could think of it the Hogwart Express ! I would have done a complete re-paint, but I really do not have time for overhauling; I have my others projects and more importantly a lot of school work! My other question is about the hydrostatic lubricator. Is it normal that after around 7 hours of running, the sight glass is full of black and green gunk? What liquid should I use to make it clear again? What tips do you have for using it? Cheers Marc

Yes but its two hours away!!!!! And he's rude!!!! I love volunteering, I am a volunteer already in Geneva, and I love it. But asking me to drive two hours there and back, pick up rubbish while all the other members are playing.... not fair

Life's not fair, get over it. I drive 4 and a half hours to the Talyllyn, four and a half home again.

And those are different, orginally volunteers, and they need them. Its a heritage railway, and is based around voluntary work. Of course, there are employees there. But, i'm sure you get treated well, and respected for the work. If there were other members volunteering, for example they have weekends for volunteers and maintainance, sure. But when I would be the only volunteer, not paid, not respected... come on

Ohh right, so you go there, work one hour and come back? Im sure you stay for a couple of days, and enjoy being with other volunteers, as a team, enjoying banter and proud of the work you do!

And can i just say.. i do not expect people to do things for me at all.... most teenagers sit all day doing nothing, playing games or watching tv. I actually preferred to spend my summer working to get my loco.. not just complaining to my parents saying give me money... take me here... take me there

Anyways, off track, I love volunteering and I defintely do not expect people to do things for me, but I do expect to be treated nicely, not shouted out, saying he doesnt have time for, then shouted at after saying I did things completely wrong even though he could have told me before! This is supposed to be about the engine. not the stupid chair. SO : Anyway.. we seem to have drifted off a bit from Simplexes Although my loco is in fine mechanical condition, cosmetically I find her a bit boring, and I want to add a bit of detail to her. I think the reason I was more inclined to BR, is because then I can add detail which is recognised. And, I can find BR transfers easily. But i'm really not sure. I'm sure there is something I can do to give my simplex a lot better look, without painting it. I defintely think sticker lining is a good option, not too hard to apply but should really add something. I do love industrial locos though, they are my favourite sort of locos, infact 0-4-0 Barclay Tanks are. Since my railmotor is at rolling chasis stage, I think I'm going to decorate to be like a barclay saddle tank. One thing which does agrevate me about my simplex is the windows, I would have much prefer round windows but I think making a new cab would take a while, when really think simplex is for using at the moment, not for overhauling just quite yet. I have my railmotor for that

Ahh I though it existed ... Maybe not a tank.. hah far from it but it did exist. I think it would look good with yellow lining, br numbers and logos... and more importantly, BR goes with the totem badge I have for my cap And, since im british living abroad, its a nice way of pointing out the loco and i'm british Marc

I would just concentrate on getting Simplex in steam and get familiar with it as it is.
Steam locos need lots of attention without looking for additional alterations.
You will find little problems crop up with sticking ball valves, loose nuts and bolts, leaking glands, water supply for the injector etc.
There is plenty of time for cosmetics when you have more knowledge of the routine maintenance, which you will acquire if you run regularly.
You will also find you need to buy in the tools to perform the necessary work - it is all part of the fun believe me. When you overcome a problem and get the loco back out running it is fantastic.
Pete.

------------------------------------------- Oh LOOK, it's The Great Bear, re-clothed !!........That, (and the re-built MN's) just on looks alone, is the classic British steam loco for me..........Shame about that points lever though..

Yep very sure; I already have a list of jobs! Getting used to hydrostatic lubricator, creating a solution for sight glass Fix one of the smokebox door hinches, one of them is loose Re injector, I manage to get it working just before the steam up last saturday. I managed to find a air tap for fish tanks, then silicon tubing to connect tap to a 5l water container. Then drilled a hole through plastic, added a small hort port and siliconed it to the container. Didnt work at first but now it does. I'm still not happy with just the injector, axle pump and hand pump, but hopefully will learn to master after time as you said. I'm trying to steam up as often as possible, and as soon as I get a few metres of track, I should imagine i'll steam it up weekly . My rolling stock is the main problem at the moment, I have to find a better way to fix my bogies to it. But yes, I got a great feeling when the injector started to work . But yes, that is very much on my mind.. a routine... like where to oil, startup fuel, how often to fire/ rake and the best water level to keep and how to make sure I dont get to dangerous levels like I have on my past run. Twice now I have found myself with no pressure, no fire and no water.... must find out why it keeps catching me out! Still havent got my routine, keep experimenting but thats the way to go! Marc
