Hi My lathe has a number of lubricating nipples that require oil, rather than grease. The nipples are a bit slimmer than an ordinary grease nipple. Anyone know where I could get an oil gun to suit. Lathe is a Smart & Brown model A Regards Trevor

You can, at a pinch, do 'em with an ordinary oil can, depress the ball with the end of the nozzle, and then apply a few squirts - a little practice is all it takes

It might be worth having a look at Myford as they supply an oil gun for the nipples on their lathes.

Hi Wayside,
That is an easy one, Use the myford Esso Nuto H44 oil, supplied by them!!
In fact I use a general purpose, heavier oil, on all the slide ways but it is important to use the right grade of oil on the headstock spindle. If it is too heavy it will not wick properly through the feeder.

Thanks Chris
I bought an MLsuper 7 in very nice condition from an elderly (81) chap who claimed to be a qualified engineer he had covered the lathe bed etc with copperslip grease when I queried it he said it was a recognised thing to do, I thought it was far too heavey and would cause wear because of the heavier drag, so far I have not cleaned it off but I have a mind to do so. I have a can of new but straight SAE40 engine oil (no detergents) which I use with 1930's car engines would that do the job for everything but the headstock?

I too still have some straight 40 oil which has been the "food" for my Myford headstock for the past 30+ years. Doesnt seem to have done it any harm.

Hi Wayside,
I am sure the sae 40 you have will be fine for the slides. I would still pay Myford a few pounds for the correct stuff for the headstock. (it is just the tapered journal which I think might be sensitive to oils).
Alan is your Myford an ML or a Super 7? The ML drip feeds and it is the wick on the Super 7 that I would be concerned about. Maybe I am just over cautious on this!!!

Chris, Mine is an ML7 of late-60's vintage. As you say, drip feed.
