My new airbrush arrived yesterday. I've opted for a Badger 350-9 model. It's not expensive, seems to get good reviews, and spares seem easy to get. It's a single acting model which is all I want, to be honest I only really use an airbrush as a miniature spray gun rather than full on airbrush artistry. Looks like it'll take the same hose as the old Proxxon one so I should be able to use the Proxxon compressor and hose without any adapters too. At first glance, it also looks as though the Badger nozzle assembly will fit the Proxxon body, so assuming my air valve is in fact ok on that, a new Badger nozzle should bring it back to life, I could have a medium nozzle in one and a fine or heavy in the other if I wanted!
Anyway, if it is the same hose, I might spend ten minutes of my dinner break tonight repainting the cab sides - watch this space!

Good news, same hose fits. Spent 20 minutes at break time laying down what I hope will be the topcoat of paint. I've shut it up in the box to keep the dust off an I'll leave it there until Monday.

Ed does that mean you can have one in each hand.....true western gunslinger style. Thanks for your input on the smoke box. Regards Paul

Bit of a set back today. For some reason the second coat on the first side has reacted with something. It was the underside so I thought I'd give the other side a go, but unfortunately its reacted with that too, in quite dramatic fashion! I'll have to shot blast back to bare metal and do again. Odd that the first coat was ok, something must have got on them between coats, don't know what though, I've not used anything else.

Ed .. I had a similar problem when painting the A4 .. it turned out I hadn't let the first coat dry properly before putting on the second coat ...

Did you measure out the paint / thinners ratio out between coats? I had a disaster once when I put more thinners in the second coat.

Hi Ed...that doesn't look like a typical reaction to me....always difficult to tell from pictures but I'm inclined to agree with Robert, perhaps the coat below hadn't fully cured. If so re-coating with anything except a very light coat can effect the paint below as it softens the surface. To me it looks like too heavy a coat on virgin paint. Added to this could be damp air, personally I try to not do any painting at this time of year for that very reason. Paint can take weeks to fully cure, if the first coat has softened you may find the easiest way to remove it is soaked in white spirit, if the paint comes of easily using a brush them you'll know that it hadn't cured.
regards
Pete

Etch primer and first coat were done some time last week, forget when. I did the first side second coat on Saturday morning, when ok, it might have been a bit cooler, maybe, perhaps. I'm using a large box upstairs at work to spray them in and keep them in, damp is unlikely to be present, it's around 22*C up here at present.

That looks to me like acrylic and oil based paints have got mixed up? I had a similar effect when I touched up some scratches on the Duchess frames. That was oil onto acrylic, came up just like your photo shows.

What surprises me is that the first coat was fine. I meant to try another piece today but forgot, just to see if it was the can

These splashers were done with exactly the same primer and topcoat, though I will admit I cannot for the life of me remember whether they've had one or two coats of black. The last time I looked at them they were fine I've been at work today using the CNC mill, while I was there i've shotblast back the problem bits, given them a fresh coat of etch primer. I've checked the Acid 8 and that says nothing about re-coating, the topcoat is plasticote gloss black which I've used many times, that says re-coat within the hour or after 24, and it was definitely after 24. We'll see how it goes this time round....

Well, two coats of top on Saturday and it seems fine. I've just turned them over and the bottoms have had two coats, and all seems fine this time round....very odd....

Ed,
I've acquired a complete Annie Body recently dressed as a GWR county. It needs piping and some minor repairs. The problem is although it came with a 'Bonds' pressure gauge I can't figure out from the backhead where it fits or even if it original had one.
Is it possible you could kindly please take a photo of yours as a picture speaks a thousand words.
Many Thanks
Charley

Ed is very much active though sadly not on here currently.
As for your old Bonds O' Euston pressure gauge suggest you buy a new one. The Bonds pressure gauges had brass bourdon tubes that corrode badly - I have 2 defunct examples in my collection.
You can fit the pressure anywhere you like. It helps if you can see it when driving.
Cheers, Julian
