Thanks for the advice, I hadn't noticed either. The offer of Ed's email was appreciated but I really wouldn't wish to trouble him. I'll have a chat with our boiler inspector and get his view.

As Alan suggests, the original drawings show the boiler fitted with the normal LBSC turret and one of the connections is used for the pressure gauge and the other for the blower. The turret also houses the whistle valve.

Having removed the years of surface rust and grime I ran the engine on air yesterday. The valves were as set by the last owner. In reverse it ticked over no problem. In forward it turned 1/2 a revolution and stopped.
The engine has Stephenson link valve gear. As the loco runs in reverse is it a question of opening up the valves and adjusting them or is it more involved?

It's certainly worth checking the valve timing first. It could also be that the eccentrics are not set correctly.
