I have been helping the widow of a recently-deceased pal to clear his workshop and radio equipment, trying to update my website, buyiing a new(to me) car, and trying to get the garden into some sort of shape.
Apart from that, there is a ham radio event on Saturday I am preparing for, and am having to sort the motor on my Myford ML7 which is suddenly giving trouble. In between hospital & doctors visits.
I might actually do some engineering, given some luck and nothing else happening.

Hi Alan,
I hope all is well. "In between hospital & doctors visits" sounds ominous.
I for one am missing regular installments of Stepney porn.
All the best

Work ............. the ruination of the drinking classes. But.. Even on a 3rd generation FPSO we still have 2 x reciprocating steam pumps. As the man used to say "Not a lot of people know that"

John There it is the nail in the coffin for me, I'm sick and tired of the endless bullshit bickering on this site, everyone had a right to post if you not intreated don't read it! I'm not going to sit in silence any longer as my friends are abused! Account deleted!

Amazing how my simple compliment to one poster is taken as an insult by another. I suppose that is indicative of how the quality and attractiveness of this forum has declined in recent times. No wonder it's quiet around here... John

Sean please don't leave... too many good people have left this forum already and that I believe is why the atmosphere is off just now...personally i hope all come back as i'm missing them and the fun days.. John I disagree.. I am no different to any other member past or present and all should be able to post as often as they wish and in any context that they choose within the rules laid down....it's a forum. I understand why roger made his comment... I mean how many of us here thought the same thing, i certainly did as I too haven't posted any updates on my build but then I've not felt like doing any what with all the crap here. However I thought better of saying anything not wishing to start yet another ill feeling content in what should be an innocent thread. So far I have refrained from leaving mainly as it's not the type of thing that i do, I'm well versed in dealing with forums and the moods that they take at times, having in the past been responsible for a forum with over 250k registered members for a number of years and only ever needed to ban a handful in that time.... things blow over and move on, people fall out and make up, it's the way of life but sometimes someone needs to say 'STOP' for normality to resume....

i always read what sean (bhk) posts with considerable interest. we need the younger well informed engineers to contribute!
i agree 100% with pete.
when our spring and easter house/gardening tidy-ups are finished i am sure there will be a flood of surpressed enthusiam in the workshop in a few weeks time!
as for mike's comment about 'Stepney porn' im not sure what alan stepney makes of this! if mike is referring to my own 5"g Stepney i will be resuming progress very soon once ive finished a few jobs i'd rather not mention at the moment!
cheers, julian

I started my own build log to try and help get things moving again after a somewhat turbulent couple of months and I hope that people are not disappointed with my diary although I appreciate that most of you know far more than I do. However, if my diary helps even a single person by encouraging them to start their own project or even just get a few hints from it, then I will consider the whole exercise worthwhile. I don't mind if someone says it's boring, or it's too simple, for someone else it may be the confidence booster that they needed. If we don't share our knowledge, whether it be right or wrong, at some point in the future, there will be nothing left...

SNIP If we don't share our knowledge, whether it be right or wrong, at some point in the future, there will be nothing left... Steve Agreed, and mine and many others' build threads are predicated on that idea. The trouble is, the knowledge we have (most of us anyway) is based on simple tried and tested techniques which do not rely on an iPad connection! John

Alan and Julian,
Sorry for that "senior moment".
All we need now is for Alan to start a build thread for a loco called Julian and I shall become irretrievably confused.

I've been busy with my locos! Steam tests at our club last weekend, all well iam glad to report then a happy hour driving again after a lay off of several months it was very satisfying to get behind the regulator again, you can't beat that smell! (the club doesn't run in the winter) After decorating most of the house since October last year, just when we finished running, iam in the good books at home! Just as a matter of interest I just read the topics that suit me or what interests me at the time, I've commented before when someone makes the effort to write a build thread let them! The bickering just spoils the subject and really must pee off whoever spends the time to contribute. Regards Chris

I read everything above the sales, but I don't always comment, and sometimes just the 'Like' button suffices, without repeating the same answers over and over and over and making a thread ridiculously long.

I read everything above the sales, but I don't always comment, and sometimes just the 'Like' button suffices, without repeating the same answers over and over and over and making a thread ridiculously long. As Ed has said, often the "Like" button is sufficient to show that you appreciate the content of the post. I have seen on other forums where every post by a popular contributor has resulted in a dozen or more posts that are just a back-slapping exercise, as if they are all competing for a post-count trophy or something. Yes, it's nice to be complimented by someone for your efforts but receiving a "Like" is just the same. And there is another use of the "Like" button that people may want to consider. If you are researching, say, a build log and you discover a post from a couple of years ago that is useful, you can hit the "Like" button and the author will know that the thread has generated interest somewhere. Ressurecting the actual post to quote it and say "Good idea" or something equally mundane seems to have little value unless, of course, that person has some new and interesting contribution to make. I still think that a decent amount of banter is neccessary, though, as the forum would be a dull and dismal place if every post was strictly technical content. If nothing else, a bit of waffle can help put a smile on someone's face. Just waffling away, Steve
