------ and here's the wheelset finally re-assembled and awaiting some paint........ I wont list the other wheelset's refurbishment as it's only repetition.. The wheels in the background are a set of scrap Castle ones....

Whats the grub screw in the middle of the eccentric? Does it go flush when tightened or does it have a groove in the strap?

Whats the grub screw in the middle of the eccentric? Does it go flush when tightened or does it have a groove in the strap? I have left everything loose at the moment as it'll help access when painting.......The screw will be below the surface and the space above it crammed with LM grease.... Alan

I've done some tidying on my Stuart 10H this evening. As the first steam engine I ever made I felt it deserved a bit more love... I've mounted the steam inlet pipe and control valve, may potentially yet put an exhaust pipe on it too, but thats enough for one evening. I fitted the stanchions either side of the valve as I hate the idea of the pipework flexing when the valve is turned. It's still not perfect, I have a couple of things I would like to redo, but I've learned so much over the past few months that it feels like someone else made it. I'd do it very different if I were to do it again. EDIT Just noticed I never did clad the cylinder!

Work on the Autocoach was been put on hold while I dealt with the blown gasket on the Dart. At lunchtime on Sunday I could have steamed it up and run it. By teatime it was far from runnable after a bit of a strip down. I had thought I may be able to get the cylinder covers off ‘in situ’ no such luck as the front horns get in the way. The offending item. You can just see a bit of gasket hanging out of the rear right cylinder cover Monday was clean up and then replace the gasket. Once that was done I got the cylinders back in and the motion all re-connected. Tuesday was spent making a ballast weight to sit under the front axle. I have dry tanks with about 10kg of lead in each side but as the tanks are mostly behind the middle axle put some of the weight on the un-driven rear axle (0-4-2). Now 7kg of the ballast will be directly under the front axle and the remaining 13kg still in the tanks but at the front and forward of the main axle centre line. Once that was done the boiler went back in. Today was only a half day reconnecting the plumbing and refitting of the platework I had given myself a week but the job was done in a reasonably casual three days If the weather is kind maybe I’ll get to run the trainset at the weekend. I'd do it very different if I were to do it again. EDIT Just noticed I never did clad the cylinder! Hi Nobby, Not trying to upstage you here but your mention of the 10H reminded me of a little "Contract" job I did for Joyce's brother Kenny last Summer......... He tends to collect items such as the Stuart stationary model etc. and after a shopping trip to Wolverhampton one day presented me with a cardboard box full of bits 'n bobs......Could I assemble it and get it running ?? Originally he wanted the big boiler to power an assembly of 4 or maybe 5 of his engines...........then halfway through changed his mind !!......which accounts for the odd set-up and relative position of the individual items......... For example the exhaust pipe was originally to be connected to the chimney but now will discharge into a container of some sort........ The drain cocks are almost unreachable.........the gas burner mantle is only half the total length of the boiler drum, whilst the thin gas supply pipe now needs lengthening due to the canister's re-positioning... But, as Ken is in early stages of Dementure I reasoned that those things didn't matter one jolt, so long as I could get it running for him.... Well, I managed it in the end and he's happy to play with it, so all's well I suppose ?? Thanks Alan

Wednesday, 21st Jan---21.30 hrs}--- It's STILL KOLD !! ( That's the Siberian spelling ! ).. but I can't sit around watching the TV so I've just spent a couple of hours in the main Workshop sweeping up, putting drills back into their containers etc.....and giving this electric hand drill its' annual check...... Originally bought from Aldi Supermarket some 10 years ago, it's lasted reasonably well as a general domestic tool until the rechargeable battery pack within the handle grip gave up the ghost, mechanically that is....The various thin joining straps that connect one storage cell to another were corroding through quite badly... even though electrically they were still holding a charge OK..... I didn't want to get rid of it as it's specs. are quite good}---- 1/2" Keyless chuck, ...... multiple-choice impact settings, ......Direction change switch, ...... 12v,.... so I stripped it completely, totally removed the U/S battery pack and then connected a long length of heavy duty 2-core cable via the empty handle through to the electric motor..... Where the cable passes into the handle I've drawn a small, excess amount in and secured it with two, heavy duty Zip ties and then one of the same on the outside....Now I can pull the drill up by it's cable knowing that there is no load onto the internal wiring..... The red, plastic bucket is courtesy of Telford Council and the AGM battery is a spare from a 5" gauge Battery / Electric loco..... At home it can be pushed along the floor by foot, whilst down at the Club track---with an extension cable in use ----I can access the Station roof etc..OR placed on one of the bogied flat trucks I can access anywhere on the whole circuit at any time.... The Workshop floor comprises an inverted layer of 3mm Hardboard laid over a 2" concrete pad......The hardboard has 2 coats of red oxide paint soaked into it.....

Interesting little setup! I'd like to know more about that boiler. Hello Nobby------- I believe it to be one of the older Stuart Turner "500" series boilers, the 504 in this case... I don't think they make them any more but they seem to come up on e-bay from time to time.... But they are not cheap !!......£250 - £350 for the 504 for example....

The 'today' part of this is finding the photo, otherwise it's more 'what I did in 2003-ish'. Yours truly running dad's sweet pea on the track around the house, but if you look carefully I'm also 'double heading' with the rolling chassis of blowfly coupled up behind.

Thursday, 10th Jan. 2019..........late evening}-- This is the third and last wheel set from the Simplex being worked on.........I wasn't going to mention it but I thought you might like to know about this latest bit of repair that needed doing ?? As you can see from the length of the crankpin this wheel is from the centre driving set...........At first a casual glance showed it to be the same as it's opposite number......untill you looked closely where the pin's larger diameter sits upon the wheel boss face.........and in this case there was a gap of some 0.015" - 0.020" ( ie about 1/64" )......This means that the smaller diameter is subject to a bending moment when in operation...This would not happen if the full diameter where to be in contact with the hub as designed.... Quite clearly a final, finishing cut had not been made as --- under the magnifying glass --you can see about 3 different faces where the cutting tool had come to rest when turning the smaller diameter for the return crank to sit on.........So, a slight cut with a R/H knife tool, starting with the point at the junction of the small diameter and the face and winding the topslide outwards will give me the accurate 90 degrees as required...

Helping my son Airbrush his Airfix model, a Schwimmwagen 166 in 1:35 scale. Really proud of him, his skills have really come on through his practise. My first time playing with an airbrush, even just a Humbrol Cheapy, and I'l really impressed. The finish is excellent, he is doing far better than I normally get with a brush.
