I need to red line the gauge on my 7.5 Bagnall.
In the past I have taken gauges apart and put a line inside.
There must be something that will stick to the glass - anyone got ideas?
Pete.

The problem with marking the glass is that you are likely to get an increased parallax error as the needle is further from the glass than the scale...

And the glass can rotate, not a good idea. I thought that this method of gauge marking was banned by the powers that be? regards Brian

Our boiler inspector recently politely rejected a locomotive boiler for having the line marked on the glass. However in this case the glass was able to rotate a little and therefore the reading changed.
When I was in flight test I used to mark gauges from scratch. We used letraset.

Pete Marking on the glass is not permitted. If you cannot mark the dial a mark on the bezel is the only permitted alternative and then only if the bezel cannot rotate. George Ray

I have put a thin strip of red sticky tape on the bezel.
See how long it lasts.
Pete.

I was told that if you do mark the glass make sure the mark goes onto the body of the gauge you can verify that the glass has not moved. Not the best of worlds of course. D

I use automotive pin stripping tape as it sticks well on the face of the dial and is easily removed if needed. Also the thickness of the tape is exactly 10 PSI on my gauge.

Sorry have I missed something, Pete whats wrong with just marking the dial? If it were me I would deem tape on the bezel, and on the dial personally, as bad as marking the glass as it can easily peel off.
I see the only proper solution on this is red paint line on the gauge dial and its fairly simple to do.

The Pumphouse team have found a number of gauges with bezels that are very reluctant to come off. They do give way eventually, but it can be a bit fraught trying to do it without damage.
