I helped do a partial repair job on one a few years back.......As you can see it has a very compact wheelbase and is not particularly easy to work on................I don't know about it's performance, best see what others have to say.........

Yes, the 0-6-0 version. My Uncle owns the one that used to be the RMES club engine

They just look right, wondered if they went as well as they looked

They gave me the impression of looking fore-shortened-------I prefer the Simplex "look" which seems more balanced to my eye ( the good one, that is !)

Butch and Chubb are very old Kennions designs. doug's grandfather's example is very nice (as restored by doug), but ive seen some pretty awful examples, and they arent highly regarded. same could be said for the Reeves Ajax design - the later Achilles version is better.
it is quite interesting how certain colours and liveries suit certain types of locos both in fullsize and miniature! most companies opted for dark green because it was a pretty stable colour. the LNWR opted for blackberry black because it was cheap in the days of Moon's chairmanship!
my next project is an 1861 loco painted light blue with red lining and lots of brasswork!
cheers, julian

hi alan, no, it isnt an LBSCR E1X rebuild! it's the first loco on the IW built in 1861 by Slaughter and Gruning of Bristol a 2-2-2WT loco. another easy lift 5"g loco for fun running! the boiler is virtually identical to Stepney's apart from the dome over the firebox. but the pic you kindly uploaded of Thomas does show the original colours of same! perhaps something to do with bristol and cobalt blue? when i cop it it will get donated to the IOWSR Havenstreet Museum hopefully for display! cheers, julian

www.youtube.com/watch?v=eebWMW5OX8MKnow I already knew about this simplex before, but since it was green, I never thought that I could 'replicate' a bit. This is exactly the type of loco I want, a very nicely detailed but still freelance simplex. I love the lining, I love the number on smokebox and I love the yellow colour of the cab, the toolbox, the handrails... its all adds up to be a fine example in my opinion. I think I will take inspiration from him. The black/white lining looks great on this southern green, and I think it would look just fine on my simplex too. The handrails and smokebox numbers I would also add. The tool box i would have to somehow make or buy; It would look great as the handpump lid. Logowise.... either the british railways lion or a white or black NCB logo. I just need to find out wear to buy the smokebox number, handrails and a small toolbox... surely he didnt make it himself Marc

(BEN !!)................. Hi Marc, You need to talk with people such as Blackgates, Maidstone Engineering, Reeves etc. and they'll give you all the help you'll need..........Why not have a go at making a tool box yourself ??--------- It doesn't have to be any particular "exact" size, just use the one in that video to get some proportions from and use your imagination a bit............Have a look in the Dolls House catalogues for small hinges etc ( They use the same scale reductions as we do in some cases )..........One thing you can do straight away on your "Red Devil" is to paint the cab interior in pale cream and the floor black ( or line the floor with wooden strips...as per full size ).........

That's the one, I can never remember which is the 0-6-0 and which is the 0-4-0 -------------- the bigger one is all "Butch" whilst the smaller is nice and "Chubby"...just like a small baby ---

Haha.. indeed a red devil! I think I will look at lining the floor, then seeing if I can fit another coal bunker inside the cab; when I run on a mile long track, I just really do not have enough coal onboard. Although the results are really nice, I do not think I will re-paint the inside of the cab, it would mean dismantling quite a few things., and I am very nervous. I really do not want to loose anything or break anything now that I have a working loco. Already taking of the lubricator to fill and clean it will be a challenge at first for me. I do not have enough experince and materials yet personally to do that; even if just a simple bolt broke, it would take weeks to get a replacement or the materials to build a new one. You may regard me as being lazy, but honestly it is just because I am so scared of jeapardising anything. Re-painting the smokebox is going to be a challenge without taking it off; I guess i will just need to be extra careful that everything is masked up properly. I'm sure I'll gain in confidence soon enough Marc
