I agree with Noel that the 3 inch is too small and the 6 inch is too big, ideally a scaled up 3 inch would be ideal size for a five inch gauge loco. I have built quite a few of these pumps over the years, a batch of five of the small ones ( gave two away to club members) two are fitted on to stationary steam plants and-work beautifully down to about six strokes per minute, they do put in more than they take out, but only just, not a problem on a stationary plant but not ideal for a locomotive. Reluctantly I must vote in favour of an injector.

Thanks Bob, I shall remember not to paint the insides in future, I really regret buying the cast ally tank, it seemed like a good idea at the time but it doesn’t hold anywhere near as much water as a sheet brass one would due to the thickness of the casting, it’s about 8mm, a brass tank would hold easily 40% more water.

Maybe I am lucky with my paint not coming off, after a run the residual heat from the boiler dries the tank out and it is stored empty.

When I built my Gemma 0-4-0 I purchased the cast aluminium saddle tank, big mistake as the thing was porous so I coated the inside with fibreglass resin and painted over the resin with paint from Precision Paints. Five years has passed since doing it and no paint has come off, and the tank no longer leaks like a sieve.

I have found that a couple of the large disposable aluminium cooking trays, the sort that most supermarkets sell around Christmas time for cooking the turkey in are ideal for swarf catchers on the shaper.

What a beautiful machine, a workshop just isn’t complete without a shaper.

Jon38r80 I seem to remember two fuel proofers from my model aircraft days, one was Humbrol fuel proofer, basically a single pack polyurethane varnish and Ripmax Tuffcote, a two pack varnish. A mate of mine used to work for Ripmax and he told me that it was Furniglass Hardset varnish just rebottled and re badged, don’t know if you can still buy it nowadays but it was used a lot by the furniture trade back in the day.

Plenty of small machines used 5/8 capstan tooling, Llorch and Shaublin both made capstan attachments for their machines. I don’t think Myford made any tooling, it was most probably bought in and re badged. I agree that 5/8 turret tooling is very scarce, on the plus side it is not too difficult to make your own. Have you considered using ER collets, holder should be easy enough to make. For theading there are quite a few small Coventry die heads on the usual sites with the correct size shank.

Makes much more sense really to use Bristol levers or similar, the thing will be used not sat on a shelf and admired and it will save hours of messing about trying to orientate the ball handles just right. Many thanks Jason.

Must confess to having two sets of Quorn castings under the bench, they are “seasoning”, one day I will pluck up the courage to start machining them, it’s all the ball handles I have got to make that puts me off doing it.

I have got a couple of genuine Eclipse pin chucks bought when I was an apprentice 50 years ago, Just before Covid I purchased two more from a well known trader secondhand and although they were marked as Eclipse the collets would not run true and the closing cap and collets are not interchangeable with my originals despite being supposedly identical items, needless to say the dodgy ones got binned. It is a sad fact that a well respected brand name of the past is now not worth the paper it is written on. Buying any tooling nowadays is a total lottery.

I suppose it is possible that a non superheated engine would run without lubrication, have a look at the inside of the chimney, if there are signs of oil in there you know that it has been lubricated at some point.

I think I would use something like araldite or perhaps JB Weld. Of course you could also soft solder them on or use one of the thicker superglues. I must admit to screwing mine on with a couple of 8 or 10 BA countersunk screws.

I don’t know, you have to ask the woke brigade or the snowflakes for the definitive definition.

I suppose we will have to say internal and external to satisfy the sensitive ones.

Rather than mess around with calculations why don’t you make a Rob Roy boiler to the correct Martin Evans design, thousands of Rob Roy’s have been made and the boiler as designed works OK.

Wilf there was a lot of talk a few years back about a bridge or tunnel to the island, has anything come of it?

Sad to hear of clubs folding up due to lack of young blood. The club I belong to has had I think three new members in the last six months, unfortunately I don’t think any are below retirement age. I don’t know how you get youngsters interested.
