Roger no access to cnc at the moment, maybe time to get the wallet out and invest in up to date tech.

Roger I was thinking of brown paper for gaskets, it seems that my problem is going to be the software for the Cricut, it needs Windows 10 or above, I am still using 95, 98 and XP, it’s going to make a few gaskets quite expensive.

I have been looking at these Cricut machines in our local Hobbystore, unfortunately the staff are only trained to take your payment and not answer your questions, I am wondering if it is possible to cut out gaskets on one of these machines. It seems that they will accept DXF files so maybe a cad drawing of the gasket, it would save having to cut loads of tiny holes out and they claim that the machines will cut card, paper and tissue. Does anyone have any knowledge of these machines, or does your better half have one of them and could comment on the machines suitability.

I would have thought it would be governed by the smokebox diameter, usually the cleading diameter is just a little bit under the smokebox diameter.

I have been using Meshcam for just over a year, I have found it very easy to use and it works on Mach3, my stumbling block is learning 3D cad but that’s another story.

Oldnorton I assume the “available oven” is the domestic oven when the wife is out shopping.

I run a Gemma 0-4-0 saddletank in 5 inch gauge, the saddle tank is an aluminium casting so quite thick walls to it which means it only holds about 1 Litre, I fixed up a similar system to John L using a 5 litre plastic petrol can and a submersible caravan pump, means I can do more than two laps of the track without worrying about running out.

Somewhere on this forum is a thread about screwcutting on a Cowells and it gives gear trains for all the BA threads plus ME threads of 40 and 32 tpi, if it can cut 40 tpi it can do 20, try a search, if I remember correctly Jo was a contributor I think she was interested in the BA sizes.

If the eccentrics are just held to the axles by grub screws they may well have slipped, that would most probably account for it being a bit off beat, we all have to learn on something, my learning loco was a kit built Polly 2 0-4-0 tender loco, looking back I cringe at some of the things I done to it, it is now in line to be totally stripped this winter and rebuilt with new valve gear, expansion links are totally shot, so are all valve gear pins etc, the boiler inspectors can see the boiler totally out of the frames and then a couple of coats of paint and hopefully back on the track next spring. Trouble is that life gets in the way and what you think will only take a week ends up taking a couple of months.

Looks like it is a brass pin and it seems to be bent or is that an optical illusion?

Drawing is included in kit of parts, think they do two sizes of valve I cannot remember, I purchased mine a while ago and have not got round to machining them yet, like a lot of other things, too much to do and not enough time to do it!

You have two choices, re-cut the seating and re-seat the ball on the commercial one or make your own from scratch, I prefer to make all my own boiler fittings including injectors to the design in DAG Browns excellent book, that way you have total quality control and if they do fail only yourself to blame. The quality standards of commercial fittings has plummeted in recent years, I have seen fittings purchased by fellow club members that are still full of swarf, I wonder where the trade are sourcing them from.

What do people normally do when it’s fully hardened? I don’t know, I have never got anywhere near that sort of finish, if I ever did manage to get near to your results it would go on the mantelpiece, not on the loco where it will get scratched and covered in coal dust. Joking aside that is quite an impressive finish.

Sif-bronze is frowned upon because it is attacked by the sulphur in the coal, don’t know the nitty gritty details but someone will be along soon to explain the chemistry of it all. It will cost more in silver solder but you won’t have any problems from boiler inspectors.

There is quite a choice, brown paper, proper gasket paper available in various thickness and liquid gasket, all have their followers. I will admit to liking brown paper gaskets. I have heard of gold size being used but not in a model engineering context.

Well yesterday I bit the bullet and took the saddle tank off of Gemma, it only took a couple of hours and managed to get the top of the tank off without breaking any screws or doing any damage, for those not familiar with the loco it has a flat topped tank, about 8x4 inch piece of 16 gauge brass, I am now half way through removing the Precision Paints GWR coach cream that I so carefully applied to the inside. I would rather do the job now than have problems with paint flaking off later. I have had half an hour of fresh air to clear my lungs so back in with the cellulose thinners to finish the job. Many thanks to everyone for their contributions on this topic.

I get the privacy notice pop up about once or twice a week, says we value your privacy just as Roger says, seems to come more frequently when I delete browsing history on the iPad.

I had exactly the same problem trying to insure the workshop, £1000.00 plus and a complete inventory along with photographs of every item, or the comment that you are running a business so welcome to our package of insurance with employers liability, public liability, product liability and goods in transit liability, the cost was eye watering. I installed CCTV around the house and workshop and also had a proper alarm system installed.
