Geez Dazza, If that’s what got done cause the team was gossiping, you would have to have finished the railway weeks ago if they had knuckled down! Nice work! Cheers Kerrin When the shop foreman lead dog and leading first hand (lamb) ponder what senior management have provided in the way of working drawings, usually with evidence of the Red Editing pen will see the reformed crims chatting amongst themselves while waiting. As for the Potters Orchid Railway, there may be moves soon to make some progress there as the weeds are again over 4 foot high. Paths and steps to be constructed to the lower level next to the railway, some health and other implications have delayed the contractors (which appears to actually the senior management team, ie : Mary Ann and Darrell) to make a big push to complete this. The contractors keep muttering excuses such as "needing sleep" and "too much to do". How can one get bored !

More holes, no threads in the backing plates was a recent decision from Senior Management after some discussions with the workshop head foredog. Then the Tender frame was wheeled and placed next to the loco chassis for the first time, just for kicks and giggles.

Management's cunning plan is to have simple and quick draw bar unhitching from the tender to loco via a special M3 cap head under the timber cab floor. "Management said, one year, no worries, it will be nice simple quick Loco build job, eh Preston. Three years later here we are making draw bar drag box blocks"

That all went to plan.
Squared off and drilled in situ. One corner of the sole plate is X-0, Y-0.
Chassis bolted down via 8BA and springs drilled. Nothing missed, so far but a bit of Red Editing pen was out on the 2D drawings. The cool weather has arrived at last and unfortunately I cannot yet enjoy this in a steam shed and do some laps down the Mary Valley branch in the cab of 967 and 974. Maybe later this year, just when effing summer arrives again. (Pic by my dear wife last year, I was firing that morning. )

My birthday present arrived yesterday from Stanier Engineering. A marvellous piece of workshop kit made in New Zealand. Bravo to Mike Jack for this little beauty which is destined for use in the Red Room workshop. ME has been on hold here as we devote all spare time into the terra forming of the garden railway. Terra forming is a winter time sport in Brisbane.

I've seen one of these in the flesh, it is a beautifully made piece of kit. Happy Birthday Dazza and congrats on your excellent present.

I plan using Gunnadah coal with is good stuff in the full size locos. I was talking to someone about this the other day, wondering why we don't ask a full size preserved railway nicely for some coal - not much would last us a long time in 5" gauge. He said we'd tried Gunnadah coal and it smelled bad and gummed up the tubes because our fires are not hot enough to burn it properly. I do remember the smell, pretty nasty. The smell won't bother you, but it will be interesting to see how it burns. We all miss AusChar - it was amazing how easy that was to fire with!

Only nine left in the current batch for anyone else who wants one!

The pulse is still here. Lots of railway work but not a lot of metal work in the Red Room. The last 6 months of cool weather has seen MAM and myself shovel 2 tons of hand mixed concrete, heaving heavy lumps of large and small rock, bags of mortar, mixing and sifting soils with some planting. Significant progress on the Potters Orchid Railway has been realised this winter down under. This type of work is a winter time sport atmco. (according to my current opinion)More pics of the POR here. www.flickr.com/photos/llewellyncustombicycles/albums/72157714810620477Video of a few laps here www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdsENugG52cA lot more to do, more details but the hot weather is here now so a tactical retreat to the Red Room is required. Little detail jobs in the late arvos will still continue but metal work on the garden steamer is to resume this week.
So a clean and floor mop and the Red Room beckons . As Covid did not bash Queensland up too badly due to a quick and tight shut down and the populace dutifully did their bit for society in general and with the state borders closed a lot of life resumed much better than many other areas and nations.
The Mary Valley Rattler resumed operations some time ago, with passenger spacing, trains fully booked.
This video is of a recent weekend of four days of straight steam for me. I am the fireman on the black loco #967 as we double headed out of the shed and a run to the platform. We then split and two trains went down the branch to Amamoor and I fired 967 out and drove home with 5 on. We normally have 9 on the hook. Over 210 tons. Good fun. I am in the black hat. Blimey, you've been busy! What an absolutely charming railway you're creating, an absolute joy.
You're lucky that you can still get out and about with the Rattler, things are looking pretty gloomy here for the forseeable future.

Thanks Roger, yes we are very fortunate, in Victoria they have had a harder time of it. Listening to some moan about the closures and shut downs is tiresome, as it seems the alternative consequences are completely ignored. The money is still out there, but the pathways have changed and some are doing very well. How all this pans out in the decades to come will be interesting. None of this is simple or easy and you cannot fix every thing for everyone at all times. It will be sometime before we take international air travel for granted, take care.

The Llewellyn Loco Works is seeing some action again now the major terra forming is done on the Potters Orchid Railway (32mm gauge garden railway) and the summer warmth, storms and heavy rain has arrived. The door for the tucker box in the tender front plate is underway. It is hoped to hide the RC battery charger plug behind it. Not a big job compared to fine scale injector design and construction or a A1 pacific but a wee hour or two in the Red Room is nice while listening to ABC Jazz on the radio. The hinges came from Germany, when they could still post stuff to Australia.

Hi Dazza,
Are those hinges from Knupfer? I have been looking at their website and they have some marvelous stuff there but at quite high prices. Yours look a tad better than the dolls house hinges we can get here, so it may be worth paying a bit more.

Yours look a tad better than the dolls house hinges we can get here, so it may be worth paying a bit more. Malcolm Malcolm, yes they are from Knupfer. I got them last year with some other little goodies and put them in the draw awaiting a need. These are the smallest ones they offer. I have had another order with them since March but they were unable to post to Australia, so I got a refund recently. Regards prices, perhaps one can consider them expensive but considering they have to make a living with the business costs and the small quantities of such items and the cost of stock on the shelves and I am always pleased with their product quality so I am not surprised. I am self employed and daily I struggle with the costs and complexity of doing business today in a world designed, or rather manipulated by the corporations via the Politicians to ensure the board directors get their bonus packages with the promise of trickle down economics to make as all happy and better off which is a hoax sold to us with no evidence of this working as such any where in the world. Any how I discovered Knupfer from Roger's thread.
