Wilf not worried about expansion. Estimate on the expansion of the boiler is only about 6 thou so If it gets tight in the frames then so be it. The stiffness of the mid frame stretcher and the drag box will just put the boiler locally into compression which will not be a problem stress wise. Dave

Hi Dave,
Looks to be a very nice job, but I would agree with Wilf that the boiler is a bit tight in the frames. The top horizontal stretcher behind the firebox can be relieved with advantage before painting it.
Cheers, Julian

Julian The boiler is tight to the side frames, relieving the stretchers does nothing for you as it is well clear of them. If the boiler does tighten up in the frames then we are looking at a compressive stress of around 64 Kpa which is insignificant against a tensile strength of around 40 MPa. Dave

Ok it is nearly a year since I posted anything. We are still building but things are getting very close to the point where I am going to have to paint the loco. So this is what it currently looks like. image2 by Dave Smith, on Flickr image1 by Dave Smith, on Flickr image0 by Dave Smith, on Flickr Regards Dave

Hi Dave, Wonderful work!! Are you going to paint first and then test? Or steam it several times and then strip down to paint after any teething troubles have been sorted out?? Looking forward to seeing progress… Chris 🚂🚂

Chris Plan is to finish it completely. Then take it apart and clean everything, paint it. I will then assemble it sufficient to get the 1.5 Hydraulic, steam and first couple of runs before adding the cab and cladding. Regards Dave

Hi Dave, That is a good scheme. The only fly in the ointment is if you do find problems with parts you’ve already painted/assembled. It’s tricky to work on painted areas without damage. The advantage of your plan is that things are less dirty before you start painting… Chris
