Pete, This might make everything more complicated but you could consider it. A chap from the ME site described a method where you place the whole assembly covered in aluminium foil in the domestic oven with all the joints cleaned of course and coated with soft solder paint. You let it soak a while at say 100 degrees, bring it out, peel back the foil and run a soldering iron along the joint. Once done, return the assembly back to the oven before it cools down too much to help prevent distortion. I might try a similar method but using coiled solder. Oh and when my wife is out of course. Phil H Hi Phil I get the idea of soaking it in heat prior to running the soldering iron along to add just enough extra heat to melt the seams. But what is the aluminium foil for please? Gary

Hi Phil,
Some photos would be good if you go down that route.
Pete.

Maybe to contain any dribbles of solder paint during the heating process. The boss might not be too pleased to find solder paint in the bottom of her oven!
Thing I'm not to sure about is the necessity of returning it to the oven afterwards, supposedly to prevent distortion.

Gary,
The foil is to help retain the heat when you take the assembly out the oven and of course an oven will solder stains might get you in the dog house.
And yes, returning it to the oven is to help prevent distortion.
Good idea Pete. I will try and post pictures of my attempts but I need to get shut of this laptop. It appears to be preventing me from taking part in this forum properly. I am simply not able to post pictures (yes I have tried everything that has been mentioned).

I said I would try and plan things out on this project, so, I am going to tackle :-
Finish buffers and attach to frame,
Make the regulator,
Complete the side tanks and cab.
I've just ordered some bits and pieces for all three so these items will run concurrently and should provide a balance between easy and more challenging tasks.
Pete.

When I was still at school and building Juliet, I proposed to lock the wheels like that with a little 'half and half' grubscrew. My metalwork teacher vetod that, telling me that I'd never be able to get the screw out later if I ever needed to remove the wheels, and told me to use a plain pin, so the wheels could be pulled off if ever needed. Provided your axles are ordinary BMS, and not silver steel, I don't think there should be much difficulty with the drilling.

The chances of me running this engine so much it will need a major overhaul are really nil. Pete.

The width of the left hand side tank alters and there is a very narrow piece about 7mm wide to solder in where the width reduces.
Trying to figure out how to do this as on my first attempt the heat for the second joint (all too predictably) melted the solder on the first joint.
Need a bit of thinking time which is in short supply over the holiday period!
Pete.

Pete, well done it's coming together. Think of the satisfaction when you are riding behind it. Regards Paul Hi Paul, I acquired this old chassis a few months ago. I would struggle to beat the workmanship so anything that cleans up and can be added to my chassis will be used. Not ashamed to admit it either! Cylinders are complete too. Any shortcuts to getting the project complete are fine by me. Pete.

Pete, I can't see a problem in using an alternative supply of parts, particularly if they are as good as you say. Obviously I have great admiration for anyone who makes all the individual parts from scratch but as previously stated in my case time is limited. Each to their own I want to see the loco I am building running on the track and achieving this is part of the project.
Keep up the good work and very best wishes for the New Year to you and yours and all participants on here. Regards Paul

If I had built a string of successful engines I would be producing everything myself because I would be efficient by now. Looking forward to and best wishes for 2022. Pete.

Well I have joined all the bits of the tank together and have 3 small leaks all at the base.
Should be easy to rectify but this job can wait for the New Year!
Pete.
