Pete, good to see you are back working on Juliet, mine is on the bench at present having some mods to the drain cock mechanism. I originally fitted automatic ones but have now changed to manual so a fair bit of linkage needed. Keep up the good work hope your medical problems are under control. Regards Paul

Thanks Mike. I will pay a bit more attention to Roger's guide next time. The quality of the photos is a bit iffy too. The Mrs is nagging, oops I mean suggesting, I get a new phone. Pete.

I started making a mandrel to turn the wheel treads and discovered the lathe is turning one heck of a taper. Time for some adjustment methinks.

Actually, it looks like your phone camera is just fine. Just try to not move while taking the photo. This is what has caused the blurring. Also, preview your photo before posting and you will know if it good enough or not.

Well I managed to complete the first wheel today. just needs the crankpin hole now.
I got so far with the profiling and then got nervous about taking the final metal off for more than a week. After a good blast in the gym this morning I got stuck into it.
I will put a photo up when I have done all four.
Pete.

Love the fact that you are using an old Myford with the large oil cups Pete. Wonderful to see how Myford lathes last and so sorry they are no longer with us. Thank goodness mine is grey also - never did like the green! Ed

Some experienced people have seen it and commented on how good nick it is in. The more I use it the better results I get, but I must invest in some more measuring equipment as the digital calipers I rely on were very cheap and I need to take loads of readings before I am confident I have it right. Hi Pete - yes the grey are older - I think the green came in about the 1980s when they started to compete with Asian imports. The nice cast wheel handles with spokes on our lathes became cheap chrome-plated turned handles if I recall. Yours has got parallel mandrel bushes and mine is a bit later with taper bushes which allow more adjustment. Both are well made compared with the Asian imports. I have the Myford mill which was made in the far east but taken into the Myford works, stripped and all the bed-ways stripped and hand-scraped to Myford tolerances. It came with an inspection sheet showing all the tolerances and signed. Great to see you working on Juliet - it reminds me of me in my workshop in the 1960s building my Bassett-Lowke tank engine with 'Sing Something Simple' blaring out on my valve radio!!.

Our parents tortured us with Sing Something Simple every week driving back from visiting our grandmother in Ebbw Vale, our Dad sang along to everything. In those days we would see loads of Prairie Tanks on the valley lines and of course Saddle Tanks in the collieries and steelworks. The Ebbw River was the colour of tomato soup for 20 miles and the south end of EV town was covered in red dust.
These days I like to listen to Sounds of the Seventies with Johnnie Walker on a Sunday afternoon in the workshop.
Pete.

Juliet Wheels by Peter Woodward, on Flickr 4 wheels completed apart from the holes for the crank-pins. No prizes to be won with these, the last one in particular got a bit rough as I think the tool for the small radius was getting blunt. Thank goodness I am not building a 7.25" GWR King! Anyway, on to the next stage. Before making any other parts I need to dismantle the frames. They need a couple of holes drilled in each, already spotted thankfully, and some paint. I will drill and tap holes in the eccentrics before making the crank-pins and 1/4ing the wheels. If you read this Lisa I take a lot of inspiration from your posts - thanks for putting them up and please keep them coming. Pete.
