I seem to be spending a lot of time waiting for paint to harden, so here's something I prepared earlier today. I much prefer to share my tender side with you all... John

Just looked up Posco pens to see if they are available here and they are. The promo says that they are waterbased paints is that the case with the ones you are using John?
They look to me to be the answer to a maiden's prayers.

Hi Jim Yes, they are water based, so I'm using automotive ClearCoat over the satin paint. Only the smallest ones are really suitable - the 'MR' 0.7mm ones. They are 'virgin' on the wonderful! John

I had the sad duty this morning of having to tell my trusty draftsman's pen that from now on he would be stood down from front line duties which from now on would be carried out by the much younger and rather swish young Posco lass. His nibs said he would not to cross the fine line between them unless invited. What a true and trusty gentleman.

Cab Exterior CompletedWhat Loco Number shall it be? It can't be No.1, as it has fewer splashers, but single figures would be good as I'd like to keep the cost of the transfers down...😉 I've got to do the inside of the cab again: I had a minor disaster with the finish. The front of the frames doesn't look too good either!

Nice one John.... I wonder, do you by chance have any LNER green there?, I'd be interested in seeing the two colours next to each other... Just wondering how close they are as both need to be used on 4472...
Keep up the good work sir.
Pete

First Proper Go at Tender Paint and LinesNot a success as the central mask I used was too tacky and it has lifted a couple of bits of paint on removal. I'm also unhappy with the finish of the dark green enamel, so I'll take it off and replace it with 2k paint.

Hi John.
It's looking good, though you say you are not happy with the finish of the Dark Green. Looking at it, I think you may have not thinned it quite enough, or possibly had too low an air pressure, or a combination of both. It is better to err on the side of too much thinners, than not enough. What distance did you spray from? If from too far away, the paint can partially dry before landing, and then not flow out. Airbrush manufacturers always tell you to spray from about 6". That is a disaster with paint. 6" is fine for ink, which airbrushes are actually designed to spray, but a maximum of 3" is the best for spraying paint. Air pressure should usually be around the 30psi upwards, mark....only reducing below this, with higher levels of thinners. Thinning, depends on the original viscocity of the paint, but I would try 25% thinners first and progress upwards to 30% if the resultant finish, on a test panel, warrants the thinner mixture. Just as another point about spraying: Do you strain the thinned paint mix? I would always recommend straining through 2 layers of NEW ladies nylon tights or stockings. ALL paints, from whichever manufacturer, can have bits in it. If the rim of the tin is not cleaned perfectly, before the tin is opened for the first time (and subsequent openings), the vacuum inside will such any microscopic bits into the tin when the lid is opened.

Hi Bob,
That's a good point re}-- straining the paint each time, although finding 2 NEW ladies gets more difficult by the day --LoL !!
Hello John,
Your Britannia a "Cross to bear" ??........Hardly.
That's one good-looking loco you have there.....I came across that particular thread not long before it finished and I thought it was in 5" gauge for quite some time after.....such is the quality of build and finish !!!
I'm following your Single thread with much interest and have already used a couple of your "tips" here in 5" Swindon.
Nil Desperandum...eh ??

What grade of stockings? The fishnets my GF used to wear wouldn't stop much and "Norah Batty" style stockings wouldnt let any paint through

Hi Alan. To save the blushes tights and stockings can be bought from Amazon. 20 or 30 denier. That's what I do. It's no good using washed, used tights, for straining paint because even when washed thoroughly, there will always be microscopic skin particles wedged in the fabric. That's why I stress to use new tights/stockings. Because they are obviously not being used as a clothes item, just buy the cheapest as any brand will do for the straining paint. Colour doesn't matter either. It is also important to keep them in the original bag until needed. Any unused should also be kept in the original bag. This helps prevent dust from the air, getting onto the fabric due to static, which would happen, if left out of the bag.
Bob.

SNIP This helps prevent dust from the air, getting onto the fabric due to static, which would happen, if left out of the bag. Bob. I suspect that the cat would be let right out of the bag if I was found 'appropriating' a lady's tights! Seriously, I followed every bit of your good advice this time, but this paint is like treacle, and I much prefer using 2k, so I've just been down to the paint shop to buy some RAL 1807 and some RAL 6004... I have stripped and re-primed the frames today, ready for the 2k chocolate brown tomorrow. John

Stirling Progress! After two months renovating a very tired motorhome I can now call it a day! We are off to sunnier climes in early April. Meanwhile, after just one hour with my 2mm POSCA pen... Driver wheels Tender wheels supported by the home-made cone centre. A motley collection! The small pen for the spokes has run out but Amazon will deliver some tomorrow. I'll then spray the wheels with automotive gloss lacquer and I can start reassembly! I managed to spray the frames with some 2k chocolate, getting a much better finish than I did with the enamel! The colour is a little lighter too, which I prefer. John
