Hi Another new member here, I have been interested and building stationary model steam engines for a few years and have now decided to try my hand at building a Rob Roy in 31/2 Gauge I've just ordered the book by Martin Evans and after reading through that I will get the plans and hopefully make a start so you can expect to see a lot of what some might consider simple questions.
I don't come from a engineering background, I just like to repair renovate and build things both in metal and wood . I currently own a Boxford AUD lathe and Sieg SX3 milling machine along with the usual tooling, pillar drill , grinders , buffers etc etc.
I live in the Midlands and recently took early retirement so looking forward to spending a bit more time in the workshop.

Hi Joe and welcome, seems like you have some good machines there, I also have an SX3 mill which I'm very happy with. Not sure why you have chosen Rob Roy as a loco build but you may want to read the comments being made on another thread from a new member, I think it is in the general section.

modeleng.proboards.com/thread/14135/good-first-steam-model-locomotiveAs I said in another thread, the back half of the book is about the William which I (in a very biased way) think is a better locomotive with almost identical build time and costs, but slightly easier construction. However the relative merits of lots of different types of locomotive are discussed in that thread.
