Jon Fabulous job I am amazed at how much you have done in such a short time and you should be proud of yourself. I went through a similar exercise 28 years ago. My son want a railway for his6th birthday, not just a 6 x 3 board with a circle of track, but something much more complex. It ended up 10' x 5' (to fit in his bedroom) with a central operating well and break down into separate boards for racking up the wall if required. It was to be multilevel, with fully working turntable, full control of all points, scenery etc. I had three months to get the boards, track and controls finished but with no scenery. It had a return loop in the track plan and the night before his birthday about 2.00 am and knackered, the switch that reversed the polarity of the track feed gave up and I did not have a spare. Along with a couple of other issues it meant I missed the dead line but he was still thrilled to be able to partially run it on his birthday and a couple of days spent taking things a bit slower and giving it a thorough check had it all up and running. In the end and the rest of the family were thrilled with how far I had got, which was a great relief. I am now temped to do something similar to you for my 3 year old grandson, HMMMMMM! Dave

Hi Jon, He looks to be a happy chap with his new loco! Loco runs well, well done to you!
My only comment would be to add a ridged coupling between loco & trolley, keeping the chain as a safety extra, will prevent the gap between them shrinking & catching a little hand!
Cheers Kerrin

I agree, but the riding truck we were using is only equipped with a hook coupling. So it was a case, as with the majority of this project. Make do with what was available. I did make it link via a drawbar to the little grey riding truck which is what he uses in the garden. However the club track needs maintenance to allow that truck to run, as its got narrow wheels so the gauge needs to be perfect all the way around, there's a couple of places that the grey truck derailed on So I used this truck for the run which has much wider profile tread.
