More on Reversing Levers and Crank.Been busy this weekend, though it doesn't look much! Some pics. This was the only really tricky component, and I managed to 'over machine' the slot, but I'm going to live with it as I'm not powering a destroyer! I made some filing buttons with collars on, and by using locknuts they were able to rotate in place, thus making life easier for the new file I was using. As I said, tricky! I put bronze bushes in the small end, just for fun! All the levers, operating shafts, reversing crank and actuating arm, all ready for connection to the eccentrics.... 😉 Here's the worm wheel sitting in place, but no bearing mounts as yet. Progress!

Hi John, Improving every day! It’s looking like your target steam up by Christmas is on the cards!
On the filing buttons, I stick a spring under the nut, I use nylock nuts, the spring can make for fun getting the nut started, saves adjusting the nut to get the buttons to roll.
Cheers Kerrin

Cheers Kerrin It's this detail that I enjoy, except for tiny die blocks... I made this handwheel today, quite chuffed with it! I profiled the rim, made a close fitting fixture to improve concentricity, glued the bits together, made a little operating handle, and now I'm quite pleased with it! Progress! John

Finally got around to the two split eccentrics!I'm under pressure to help decorate the kitchen, so this will be short! I need someone to confirm my thinking over the setting the 0.270" offset. Some Pics. The ME method talks about using a vertical slide to provide the settings. I don't have a vertical slide, but I do have a first class set of Coventry slip gauges! I put the test bar on vee blocks, and determined the height of the bar above the table using slips. I then removed 0.270" worth of slips, and set the pair of eccentrics down onto the remainder. It looks OK to me, but has anyone else used this method? I now have to paint the radiator...

All three sets paired up and ready to fit. Here's the LP one, just to show me what I've let myself in for! I just have to make sure that all three eccentric assemblies are the same way up...! Complex or what?

While waiting for some new nuts, I had a think about the finish. Paint, or not to paint? That is the question!Question answered, I'm going to paint it, as not many real marine engines go around looking like a cross between a polished brass button and a fireside ornament! RAL 6012, Black Green, 2k, and I had lots left over from my Stirling Single locomotive. Look it up here: www.buzzweld.co.uk/ral-6012-land-rover-engine... Some daylight try out pics, and I don't care what anyone says, I love it! Nice practical marine colour. The stands, top and pump will be this colour. The base will be satin black. Doesn't show the dirt, and being 2 pack it will last forever! The eagle eyed will note that I have increased the diameter of the cross bars on the drag links which now accept M1.6 screws, thus removing the tiny nuts on the 1/16" rod.

I worked on the condenser end caps this afternoon, right after my regular injection in my right eyeball, just to prove I can still see! I also finished the tapped holes for the drain banjos. Some pics I could either paint over the rough casting, or profile it completely to provide a smooth finish for the paint. I chose the latter. I have a carbide end mill with a 2mm nose radius: ideal for this job. Finished ready for the primer. Finished the other end after a session on the Proxxon with a round nose grinding wheel! Trial fitting. Looks OK to me. Ditto other end

Die Blocks and Expansion Links. The final link in the chain.I've had a number of goes at these, all ending in anger and frustration as I couldn't get them exactly how I wanted them, hence leaving them until last. Anyhow, I had to make an effort today, and I appear to have succeeded! Not all perfect, but the slightly imperfect one will be in the middle of the machine...! www.facebook.com/1045066958/videos/pcb.3582377762050330/1051618655857052

Not quite the final link: I'd forgotten to make the remaining drag links, and I just noticed the drawing for the valve rod lower guides, so that was this afternoon's job! Onwards and Upwards!

I had a go at painting today. Not a success, I'm going back to Bronze Bling! I'm not happy with the finish, it's too uneven. Too many awkward insets and corners. I'm going to see my friend at A1 Metal Finishers tomorrow and using their blasting kit we will produce a fine scale cast finish, which will also get rid of the unwanted shiny bits from fettling, as you can see in this example here. It does look pretty though... To the Blasters! Onwards and Upwards!

Your choice, of course - and there is much to be said for both a painted and a non-painted finish. But wouldn't it be worth experimenting a bit further with painting? I'm sure you could get a really good result by adapting your technique a bit to suit the shapes and contours of this lovely engine.
I have to say this thread has given me a lot of pleasure.

Malcolm Hi Malcolm, and thanks for the feedback, this engine has tested me and given me a great deal of pleasure too. I haven't publicised my previous attempts to get the paint right! It will be easier for me to obtain a good result by going for an unpainted finish. I have other things to finish in the time left for me... John

The castings have been shotblasted. They look so clean that I might just decide not to paint it after all!

Hi John,
My experience of that lovely shot blasted finish is that it gets dirty very quickly and is very tricky to clean.
Just food for thought...
Enjoy, Chris.

My experience is the same as Chris, doesn’t stay nice for long. Maybe worth giving a coat of matt varnish or lacquer if you want to preserve that finish. Try it on an inconspicuous piece first though.
