Looks like I'm going to paint it! This is Hunter Green Satin, and it looks great, so I'm going to ignore the siren voices and paint the thing how I want! I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..

Looks a good shade of green to me. Nice contrast with the cap screws.
When I build The simple steam Engine I painted some bits green and the contrast with bright steel and brass was great.
Thumbs up.

I added some character to the base plate. I now have to choose between green or black...

Well my vote would be for black, satin to match the satin green.

This is how the finished engine will look, once I put the internals back in! The paint job rules, OK? Well pleased 😍😇

Main Bearing Caps and Oil CupsI want to get the crankshaft and eccentrics assembled before the holiday, so this afternoon I chemically blacked the caps and made some 6.35mm x 5mm oil cups from 303 stainless rod. I'll drill the 1.0 mm oiling holes in the bearings tomorrow: any bigger than that will flood the bearings and lose all the oil in double quick time! I tried some brass but it looked quite daft! The stainless steel sets off the caps against the 'cast' base...😇

More progress. I'm glad I chose to paint it!

I have enjoyed this thread to the extent that I have started to build one of these engines myself. However on starting to machine the eccentric straps and rods my drawings do not show the following two dimensions namely the centre distance from the centre of the sheave to the centres of the fork bearings and the distance from the sheave centre line to the bolting face for the foot of the eccentric rod. Your help would be very welcome.Best wishes, Robin.

AJ Reeves tells me that as a result of my postings generating interest, they have sold 'a few' sets of castings in recent months... The supplied drawing dim. is obscured, but the drawing in the downloadable notes shows the centre distance is 3 3/16", the second distance is 9/16". Hope this helps. Regards John

A sneak preview of what it's gonna look like when I put the pistons back in after the holiday! I still need to add the weighshaft bits, but they are all made and just need pinning to the operating levers.

Excellent workmanship John, but not unexpected going on your previous projects. Being a triple expansion engine which utilises as much energy from superheated steam, the exhaust from the HP cylinder is passed to the intermediary cylinder for further work and likewise the exhaust from this to the LP cylinder. To be able to demonstrate this maximum utilisation of energy from steam it best that HP steam is used as a source, is this a likely option? I have fanciful expectations of you building a boiler and then a boat to put it in. But perhaps more fancy than reality.
Brian

First run on steam: it works!HP and IP cylinders only in use, no drain cocks yet so I have to 'warm it up' gently without locking it up! Now I know it works it's yet another partial strip to seal all the joints with the magic Loctite! www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd6zgpHRLOM
