Ok, I know I'm talking far too much about mills and not actually getting me one to make babies with (I seem to remember being the same way about girls when I was about 14).....
I've just been speaking to a guy with a little engineering business here in Ireland about a Deckel FP1 he's thinking of selling.
Here at last is something more mainline than an Archdale and the Lathes.UK site has some good info on it (ok, there is more good info on more things there than anywhere else, just not on Archdale mills).
Does anyone have any idea of the going rate for the things, what to look out for on them (like are the ball races available if needed or were they made by deckel themselves) and what accessories to definitely look for.
From what the guy was saying, it has vertical and horizontal heads. I'm not sure about whether it has plain or universal table.
I want to go see it later this week, it sounds like something I could actually get into the barn (unlike 3 tons of Archdale).

Keith There s one on ebay US at present,up to 1600 USD with a day to go, they reckon it weighs 1600 lbs so it might be a little easier to push around then the Archdale, only a little mind you!
looks like a handy piece of kit. On millers the vertical head is often the sought after therefore expensive bit so if you get one with it - great, otherwise may be nasty surprises later.
Cheers, Andy

Lots of info on Deckels amongst others at this forum, though it is US based and rather 'anti hobbyists'! However if you frame a specific question you may get the info you're looking for. You will have to register to post but can browse without. www.practicalmachinist.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/forum/6.htmlAl

In simple terms, If it has changewheel feeds and is fairly sound with the verticalhead I would offer GBP 400 for it and if it has later features go up to a max of 1500. If you need more help get back to me. Peter

Old mills .... In my erstwhile days I had a Pallas horizontal with a vertical head which had been added as an afterthought - two 3HP 3 phase motors. But... although it weighed over 2 tons, the precision rigidity was less than desirable. The feature I liked most was the rack and pinion lateral table feed - gave great "feel" Just today, I ordered a Chinese West Lake mill - you can see it on www.westlakemachine.com/productShow.asp?ArticleID=246 but unless you read Chinese, it means little. Photos of the installation (it weighs in at 285 kilos as a desk-top mill!!??) will be posted on my website probably at the beginning of next week. All-up cost including custom stand from 2 X 2 X 1/4 angle - £500 Table 730x210mm - lateral travel 500mm, front to back travel 175mm - should cope with fluting coupling rods for the Black 5!! And here was me saying living in the far east has it's down sides!

Wow! Thanks guys. I took a look over at the US site, (Thanks Artificer) they certainly look and sound the business.
there is a thread there with links to Deckel dealers, restorers etc, so it looks like there is plenty of backup and support available.
Dr John, that new mill looks nice.
Going to go see the guy and machine, it's a good couple hours away.
I'll Let you know how I get on
MMMMMMMMMM! 40 international taper...

I'm over his side of the country next Thursday for work, so I'll have the camera with me. From what I can make out it's a dial model. Not sure yet if it is a universal table or fixed. I see Ajax are still importing what appears to be an FP1 clone: www.ajax-mach.co.uk/tooroommilling.htmKeith

Hi There. I went to see the guy yesterday. The machine is lever speed & feed change. table is rigid, horizontal spindle is MT4, the verticle uses collets, I'm not sure whether these are in an insert within a MT4 or 40int bore.
back lash on the centre of x feed screw is 2.5 times 0.025mm.
The horizontal over arm appears to have had a couple of run ins with cutters, or very messy mods which cut through the dovetail.
If Icould work out how to post photos, I've got some.
Many thanks Keith

Thanks very much for posting the photos Al. the response from the guys on the other site are reinforcing what I'm thinking, that it needs some TLC and that the price should reflect that. The guy was originally trying to sell a Hesapp CM1 (5 tonnes of industrial copy mill with ?late 70's controls) with a bed big enough to sleep on.
James, Thanks for the link is the mill yours? or do you know it?

Sorry, I should have noted that I bear no connection with this mill or the seller. I just found it when browsing eBay, and thought you might like to know it was there.
James.

Hi Al, When we were initially discussuing the machine, the guy was talking €2k (£1300).
Now that I've seen the thing, received some feedback and seen what price workshops are going for at present (like "Cheap as chips" and the fleabay link James found) I'm thinking of just giving this machine a complete miss.
It's tired and without the swivelling table, I dont think it is worth getting it unless very cheap
There are more mills coming up.
Thanks again for the continuing help Keith
ps, anyone like to have a stab at the market value?
