I am not building this model but I have been asked to supply a full set of rods and valve gear made as close to scale as possible to replace those contained in the kit. I have modelled them closely on those on Nigel Greasly and measurements taken from Mallard. Of course the constraint is that they must replace the existing so some dimensions can't be changed e.g. the centre distances of bushes. Since scale thickness means that they are very slender, I have made them from a high tensile steel. I know there is only a handful of these kits but if any of you is interested in making your loco look significantly better I can help. Send me a PM. Look here for examples www.flickr.com/photos/mkrj/sets/72157623094509877/

Hi, I have two of these kits, and have carried out the work you show so well. The A3 is running, but still needs "six coats of looking at" and has now run about 50 miles. Many changes are needed to produce a decent working locomotive. Regards Leighsteamer

Hi, the 7 1/4 range of kits, just two models, the A3 & the A4 were takrn over by wilkev engineering, and all the kits outstanding were produced to an excellent standard. Most of the owners of modelworks kits availed them selves of the wilkev parts, and are engaged in completing their locomotives. regards Leighsteamer

Good evening..
Further to the post above...
Kevin from wilkev has now retired and all his stock was purchased by a guy called Kim from south wales .. i did at one time have his contact details but cant seam to lay my hands on them ATM...
The earlier post about Kevins quality is very true.. the cladding is lovely ( although as a slightly LNER perfectionist ) with some slight cosmetic bits i am planning on removing as the full sizes doesnt have the bits...
My A4 runs rasonably well although i am in the process of replacing all the valve liners and spindles as i want to be able to adjust mine to the nth degree which isnt possable with the MW ones..
A video clip is on Youtube from about 3 years ago going steam trials

As you say, some rework needed.
The shape of the A4 (et al) is quite complex and not easy to make in model size. To put it another way, its a lot of work!
Must admit that I am glad that they never appealed to me so I am not tempted to try to build one!

Greetings all, wiltsrob, last I heard from you was that the loco was having problems with its piston valves. have you cured that problem, or am I mistaken. I have just put spring loaded carbon filled PTFE rings into my A3 to try to cure the problem,as well as scrapping the 2 into 3 lubricator, in favour of a 3 pump/ 3 tank homemade one. lots of fiddling needed to get that casing right. Good luck Leighsteamer

Hi Leighsteamer, Do you have a picture of your lubricator? I'm looking to put 3 separate lubricators into one big tank that is divided into 3 so I can see if all lubricators are delivering to their respective cylinders. It sounds like this is what you have done.
All the best,
Reg

Hi, thanks for your interest. I have a number of pics that show the bits. the drive is taken from the center axle, via rocking shaft to a roller clutch lever drive. The pumps are as the late Jim Ewins, and use a scotch crank. The three tanks have partitions that allow each pump to have its output checked. Since it takes me ages to find the button to browse pics, and thus post, I will also post a pic of the system used by John Adams on his super A3's regards leighsteamer [/img]

I would love to post pics, but still can't find "Attachment" or "browse" on "post a reply" page. I can only work things that I can put coal in. leighsteamer

Hi LeighSteamer
the add image is the fourth button from the left on the bottom row. of the section marked 'Add Tags' Be warned though there is a limit on the size the picture file can be.
WiltsJob: I'm sure you can get things corrected with time and Patience and a bit of fileing. It will all be worth it in the end. just keep reminding your self of that.

Hia...
the ports on the valve sleave are 3mm undersize and the centers are 5 mm to close this means that either i have to remake the valve bobbins or the sleeves..
Ill get a couple of pics of the old ones and post them on here. I suspect it is a simular problem to the 9f that they did...
